arrowFresnans repair, rather than replace, goods

Remember the recessionista? Now consumers of all types are getting into money-saving mode. Today's front page story focuses on people turning to repairs instead of buying new when it comes to cars, washing machines and stoves.

Some people are hanging onto cars longer because they can't afford to buy new. Instead, they're opting for more maintenance and repairs. Appliance repair shops are reporting an increase in people wanting to fix their washing machines and other appliances too.

What about you? Have you turned to repairs instead of buying new? Why or why not?

Comments:

Repair, as much as possible. Recently had a washing machine break, a replacement would have been at least $500. However I was able to repair it (did take some time and mechanical skill)and the part only cost $15. However this is not a new thing for me, I was raised by grandparents whose views on buying as opposed to repairing were tempered by the depression. I think we all need to remember the lessons of the depression and of this recession. Thrift and hard work are things that may go out of style but never lose their value.
