arrowWhen Gottschalks closes, where will you shop?

Gotdoor.jpg

In case you missed, it a story about which stores will snap up Gottschalks customers ran on Memorial Day. Where will you shop when Gottschalks closes its doors for good?

Experts and shoppers in the story mentioned:
Macy's: It has cosmetics counters and will capture the big spenders.
JCPenney and Kohl's: Have sales Gottschalks customers are used to and Penneys is in the malls that Gottschalks will leave.
T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Ross: Everyone is spending less and more of these stores are getting new fashions quickly.

Readers called or e-mailed to say Stein Mart will pick up some customers. It does have similar fashions. Another frustrated reader wrote in to say she can't find the styles she's looking for anywhere but Gottschalks and went to the Gilroy outlets.

So, where will you shop and why?

Sad to say but in my 2 almost 3 years in Fresno -- Gottschalks never fascinated or convinced me to shop there. Not sure why.

As to where I have been going and probably where I suspect others will go?

Kohl's. I'm a proud MVP card holder and frequently get 10-30% off coupons. I also shop at their site and if I get the wrong size or something I can return it at the store with no hassles at all.

Gotta say -- love Kohl's.

Kohl's was a pretty strong competitor of Gottschalks. I would bet lots of people would go there instead for the reasons you mention.

People are now looking for the best deal possible. I think Wal-Mart will get a lot of business. They do carry clothing (almost all types), appliances, etc. The other winner, I feel, will be Target, because they are geographically closest to where Gottschalks was, especially at the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis. Both stores are where I have been shopping for years because of much better prices.

The same place I shopped before the Gottschalks demise: Penney's (for professional basics at good to great prices) and Macy's (for more stylish items). Gottschalks was my mother's favorite store, which I think is telling of what went wrong. They never carried the brands I liked -- everything was pretty conservative and bland. What I could tolerate was overpriced. I have never looked at Kohl's, but with the glowing recommendation from friends and the mention here, I might give it a try.
