Healthiest in the land -- Novato?
We know where to find the worst air quality in the United States. It's in California -- some of it right in our backyards in the San Joaquin Valley.
So where is the best air quality?
If you believe the Money Magazine folks, the best place to breathe this year is also in California. Go to Novato in the Bay Area, says Money.
The breakdown is among a list of other top 25 lists for America. You know the drill. The magazine ranks places according to important criteria, such as affordable prices, cold weather, fast commutes, skinny people and most singles.
Strangely, the top three cities are in the West. The two from California and Kingman, Arizona. It's based on the percentage of good air quality days, and the average air pollution index for the year.
Hands down, the West has the worst air quality in the country. Six of the top 10 worst ozone-polluted places in the American Lung Association's list are in California. Four of them are in the Valley. Three of the five worst PM-2.5 areas are in California, according to the Lung Association.
The lung association lists places in Iowa, Wyoming and Washington as having the healthiest air.
Both Money and the lung association used the government's air quality index, a health-based rating system. Clearly, they use them differently.
