arrowRecalls, from funny to fatal

Months ago I signed up for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s e-mail alerts for recalled products.

At first I was shocked at how many recalls are happening — two or three a day. Are there that many things out there that could harm or even kill me? Not really. When you read the details, it’s not so bad.

Today it was Home Depot’s recall of sun-shaped glass candle holders: “Sunlight passing through the glass portion can cause nearby flammable materials to ignite, posing a fire hazard.”

The agency has received just one report of this happening (though if any 10-year-old boys hear about this, they might be inspired to have some fun).

Kidding aside, there are dangers out there, particularly when it comes to small children. Satin trim on a blanket, for example, that can come loose and potentially strangle an infant. And a surprising number of products have lead in them, including the toy cowboy pictured.
