Raji Brar leaves local air board
Raji Brar, an outspoken advocate for health matters on the governing board of the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District, is leaving the Arvin City Council. That means she's also leaving the Valley air board.
Brar is pregnant with her second child. She also owns a local restaurant in Arvin. She says her efforts need to be aimed at her growing family now.
She became a board member last year, defeating Woodlake City Council Member Jack Ritchie in a vote by the California League of Cities. Fresno City Council Member Henry T. Perea also took a board seat in that vote, and they quickly gave voice to air activists' concerns over health and air-cleanup progress.
So what happens now? Good question. The answer is not clear.
The League of Cities is not interested in naming board members anymore. The state Legislature is looking at a law to establish ground rules for a Valleywide committee to appoint city representatives to the air board.
The newest air board member, Dr. John Telles, was appointed by the governor, who also has one more appointment to make for the board. With the addition of Brar's seat, officials now need to figure out how to appoint three new city representatives.
There's no word on how long it might take.
