Chamber: These bills must die!
Valley lawmakers can breathe a sigh of relief -- none of their bills made the California Chamber of Commerce's 2008 "job killer" list released today.
The list has proven to be the best predictor out there on how Gov. Schwarzenegger deals with legislation that makes it to his desk. Since taking office, he has vetoed about 90% of the bills that make the list, the chamber said last year.
Thirty-four bills are on this year's list.
One bill would prohibit employers from discriminating against workers who are qualified to use marijuana for medical reasons. The chamber says the bill "hurts employee safety and employers’ right to maintain drug-free workplace policies."
Another bill deals with human remains found at construction sites. Landowners would be required to secure the site and talk to local cultural organizations about how to deal with the remains. Native American remains are already given this treatment.
The chamber's take: "Delays construction of commercial and residential projects and obstructs normal agricultural practices by requiring an unworkable resolution to disposition of human remains that are not Native American."
