arrowWhat should air officials do?

Activists and regional air officials are arguing again over an air cleanup plan -- this time, it's PM-2.5.

In a Thursday story, The Bee will explain how the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District is relying on state controls to cut down on dangerous soot and chemical specks, called PM-2.5. Air activists don't think the plan is aggressive enough because the cleanup won't happen until 2014.

Last year, the same kind of argument happened between the district and activists over the ozone cleanup plan, which projects a cleanup target of 2024.

The district again this year says it left no stone unturned in searching for pollution reductions. The activists again have suggestions for speeding up the process. One idea: Limit the use of older trucks, tractors, cars and construction equipment on the worst days.

What do you think? Do you have ideas that might help the district and the rest of the Valley? Tell us in a comment.
