arrowSearch on for deadly air compressors

Authorities are warning anyone who may have taken one or more air compressors from a methamphetamine dump site east of Fresno that they may be in grave danger.

The compressors are of the type used to inflate tires and run pneumatic tools. The air tanks for the devices very likely contain deadly chlorine gas, according to Robert Pennal of the Fresno Methamphetamine Task Force. Pennal said the gas is used to process methamphetamine.

The compressors and other materias were dumped by the side of the road near Madsen and Shields avenues, where they were noticed by passersby Friday morning.

Pennal said there may have been as many as 11 compressers at the dump site, but by the time task force members arrived, all of them were gone — apparently taken by people who were unaware of the danger.

“If [the compressors] are used, you could seriously injure or even kill someone,” he said.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of the devices, they should not attempt to move or disturb them and should call the Fresno Sheriff's Department immediately.

Any questions or information regarding the compressors can be directed to Sgt. Steve McComas at (559) 488-3111.
