Hmong New Year Reflection

It is a wonderful celebration with
interesting rituals, dance, and entertainment. This year we had some rain
earlier in the day and puddles had formed at the Fresno fairgrounds. On my
way around I saw the possibility of a picture with the reflection in the
water. I positioned myself and waited fifteen or twenty minutes for the
right grouping of people to pass by. I saw the picture happen and knew right
away that it was an interesting image.
TOMAS OVALLE/THE FRESNO BEE

The Last Laugh

Chance plays a large part in providing the right subject in the right environment. In this case, an antique car with an interesting hood ornament happened to be in a funeral procession for Marlin Young. He was a lover of antique cars, movies and a grand time. I enjoy the subtle humor of the devil thumbing his nose at the cemetery.
TOMAS OVALLE/THE FRESNO BEE

Fall Colors

our impressions of the environment. This fall leaf hangs precariously
from a tree amidst a riot of fall color at Woodward Park. I used a
telephoto lens and a shallow depth of field to make the background out
of focus to draw attention to the leaf in the foreground. I enjoy
photographing nature.
TOMAS OVALLE/THE FRESNO BEE

In this case,
Judy Sowersby laughs during lunch at the Fresno Rescue Mission on June
20, 2006. On this Tuesday morning more than 150 people were served
lunch. I think a smile is a gift we give to each other. I am always a
willing recipient and love to photograph people smiling.
TOMAS OVALLE/THE FRESNO BEE

The action was on the stage, but I came across these men posing in the hallway before the competition. I enjoy the light from the hall window bathing the bodybuilders in a warm glow. The bodybuilders' muscle development is as individual as a fingerprint and comes from years of working out.
TOMAS OVALLE/ THE FRESNO BEE

A cat clings to a fence on flooded Pearl Street in Erath, La. on Sept. 25. I was photographing a search and rescue mission with 30
Marines, firefighters, and sheriff's personnel. We were driving with a
family to get their medications from their flooded residence. A
firefighter spied the cat on the porch of a house on a flooded street. The
firefighter tried to rescue the cat, but it bit and scratched him so
badly that he let it go in the flood waters. The cat swam to the fence
where I made the picture. The cat showed the ability to swim back to the
porch so we proceeded to help the family get their prescription
medication from their flooded residence and left the cat behind.
