Valley. One of the stops was the Guadalajara on Weber and Shields avenues in
Fresno. As I was waiting, I was taken by the row of brightly colored bottles
of soda on the shelf near the window. As I began photographing the bottles I
noticed that the owner's 2-year-old son Kemton Duarte
was at the far end of the room playing with the bottles.

Daniel Lopez of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Selma is a lifelong Elvis

setting up my lights to shoot a portrait of him in the church I fired off a

don't need to see the face to know it's Elvis; he really is everywhere, even
Selma.
KURT HEGRE/THE FRESNO BEE

This was one of those days with a high temperature of 106 and cloud cover, which at sunset made the orange paint glow even more.
This is similar to another picture of mine shot in Chinatown in black and white, but I think the color really gives a sense of the heat of the afternoon.
KURT HEGRE/THE FRESNO BEE

I had a few minutes to spare before shooting a Fresno Grizzlies baseball game and decided to walk the neighborhood around the stadium. The light was beautiful as this man rode his bike past me on the Fulton Mall. The building in the background looks very European to me. The architecture in downtown Fresno is remarkable and frequently overlooked. It's worth taking a walk along the Fulton Mall just to look at the buildings.
KURT HEGRE/THE FRESNO BEE

I love the fact that people are out on the streets and not in cars. It's the only area of Fresno that feels like a city.

I found these musicians walking through Chinatown along Tulare Avenue. They stop in small restaurants and bars where they play for patrons who tip them. It's not something you would see in most other parts of Fresno.
KURT HEGRE/THE FRESNO BEE

explanation. This huge head was attached to the back of a car advertising
sunflowers seeds. I saw it parked in front of Grizzlies Stadium and grabbed
a few quick pictures before moving my car to the parking lot. When I came
back 10 minutes later the car was gone.

So, either the car was never there and I was having another one of my
"spells" or somewhere around Fresno there lives a family of 10-foot-tall
mutants. Please call me if you see them, I have some questions for them.

the way they do around Arnold Schwarzenegger. It's pure celebrity worship and
a number of people seem to have no interest in politics. They just want to get
a glimpse of a movie star. I took this picture as the governor stepped off
his bus during a campaign stop at Fig Garden Village and it captures the sense of
surreal weirdness that surrounds his appearances. The sunglass wearing
figure at the right is one of the governors ever present security staff.
KURT HEGRE/THE FRESNO BEE

and it was almost impossible to make a photograph without including four
or five in each frame. I was drawn to these two men by their quiet body

quiet dignity that's difficult to show in large gatherings such as this.
KURT HEGRE / THE FRESNO BEE

I experimented with different angles at a Buchanan High School track and field meet. I saw that some of the runners in the first lane in relay races came very close to the berm when they exchanged the baton. I put the camera on the ground with a 17 mm (wide-angle) lens and pointed up to where I thought the runners would pass and started shooting. It took two races before I captured this nice baton exchange.
KURT HEGRE/THE FRESNO BEE

I had often noticed the
shadow cast by the tree on Kern Street in Fresno's
Chinatown but could never quite find the right
elements to make a picture. One day, I was sent out to
find a feature picture and drove past the location. I
saw a man feeding some birds, so I stopped to
photograph him. I shot a few pictures before he
finished feeding the birds and then noticed that as
some of the birds flew away, their shadows appeared on
the wall next to the shadow of the tree. I shot for
about 10 minutes until the birds finally moved on to
another spot.
KURT HEGRE/THE FRESNO BEE
