I asked her what was so funny; usually, infantry lines blasting away at each other is not comic. She said she had spotted an unusual sight with her digital camera with a short zoom lens: "One of the Conferderate dead is taking pictures." Sure enough, he was sneaking shots with his little digital
camera. I didn't know the Rebels had such technology available. The famous Civil War photographer, Matthew Brady, would have been both proud and envious.
JOHN WALKER/THE FRESNO BEE

I saw a

an arm." I was partly right on both counts.
It's a scarecrow guarding a vegetable field while menacingly pointing a
piece of wood cut to look like a rifle. And it wasn't alone -- there were
two standing guard. A pointed message to gun-shy birds? Or a warning to
thieves who steal crops? ... Either way, a growing problem in the area
(couldn't help that one!).
Hopefully, this doesn't start a trend in yard art.
JOHN WALKER/THE FRESNO BEE

the place. Here we found nicely kept houses, manicured yards ... and a ball
resting in a front yard that seemed to happily reflect a piece of the
"American Dream."

While wandering the streets of Fresno last September, reporter Matt
Leedy and I came upon this heart-wrenching scene of solemn 5-year-old
Summer Speckman, seemingly lost in thought, amidst bags of garbage and
puddles of water from a leaky faucet on the
sidewalk of her family's dilapidated apartment in southeast Fresno. The
photo graphically illustrated the story of hopelessness and despair
among Fresno’s poor in destitute neighborhoods, where the geographical
divide between the haves and have-nots is more prevelant than anywhere
else in the country, according to a national study.
The photo was run in newspapers across the nation, sparking offers of
assistance from the East Coast, where people
saw it in the Washington Post, to Washington state and Southern
California.
JOHN WALKER/THE FRESNO BEE
