Light filters through them providing a great light source. While photographing the sesquicentennial parade Sept. 30 in downtown Fresno I was captivated by the way the sunlight struck the colorful parasols of the Chinese Culture Association marchers. The vivid hues of pinks and oranges were electrified by the warm sunlight.
DIANA BALDRICA/THE FRESNO BEE

Here's a recent one: My boss Bill Haines asked me to
illustrate a Life section story on lounge-wear -- and I needed to develop
the concept in a day to meet a deadline. I had no model, no location and had
not seen the clothes. But, what we do isn't brain surgery, so I knew I could
complete this assignment. After reading
the story, I knew I wanted to use an art museum for the location. Bill
helped me get the museum and the model. This photograph is an out-take from
that assignment.
DIANA BALDRICA/THE FRESNO BEE</p>

While sitting among watermelons that zigzagged along neat rows, I saw the bright red juicy piece about to be savored by J.B. Jeffers. He had come to learn how to pick watermelons from a man who did it most of his life, Ernest Embers. It was an early June morning, around sunrise. Since the watermelons hug the ground low, I too sat low in the dirt observing through my camera like a telescope. I felt like a child in a candy store. The moment was filled with visual delights. I loved how he was somewhat backlit and the piece of red watermelon popped with sunlight. It was an instant, I studied for hours. These men were artful pickers.
