Snail's Pace

As Mai Mai and I
rounded a corner and headed for home, I saw a group of snails crossing
the sidewalk. I thought it would make an interesting photo but I didn't
have a camera. We ran the rest of the way home, I grabbed a camera and
jumped into my car and headed back to the snail crossing. There was just
one straggler left.
DARRELL WONG/THE FRESNO BEE

In my mind, a less than fortunate high
school kid gets his gym shoes stolen from a locker. The bully who took
the sneakers ties them together and throws them onto a power line. A
ride-along with Fresno police officer Haywood Irving clears up my
misconception. Irving says that shoes hanging from a power line are a

sign in the gang world that drugs can be bought nearby.
DARRELL WONG/THE FRESNO BEE

The Good Seats

So I gathered a bunch of paper and my media folder to make a shield for my Powerbook before the fights at Table Mountain Casino started. I knew it would come -- it always does: the little beads of sweat and blood that fly into the air when a fighter gets hit in the head. As the action got close to my ringside seat, Ricardo Cortes landed a left punch to Christian Cruz's face. The shield protected my computer from the splatter. Next time, I'll have to build it big enough to protect me, too.
DARRELL WONG/THE FRESNO BEE</p>

Shaver Lake

There are no doors. My left elbow is always numb after the flight because there isn't enough space for the pilot, me and my left elbow inside the cockpit. It's tight quarters -- but the views are spectacular. On July 21, 2006 I flew over Shaver Lake as the sun set. There were still a few boaters enjoying the lake as we made our pass.

Chair Trips

friends and I have a different vision. We call it
chairtrips. For the last eight years, we have rented a minivan and hauled
my living room chair around the country to make a series of photos of
friends and strangers with the chair in 48 states, Canada and Mexico.
Plans are in the works to get to Alaska and Hawaii. For one of the first chair photos, Annakarina sits in
the chair in front of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The chair has been rock
climbing in Joshua Tree National Park, stopped by state troopers at the
Kansas state line and rained on during a tropical storm in South
Carolina. Every chairtrip has been documented on our Web site

Flooded Neighbors

<p><a href="http://www.fresnobeehive.com/focus/darrell-wong/gallery/flooded-neighbors.php"></a></p><p> Favorite Photos of 2005
Antonio Avenue neighbors
Dan Bradford, left, and Joseph Salerno talk about the poor drainage
in their Clovis subdivision on Thursday afternoon May 5.

I was on my way to a track meet at Clovis East High School but I really
thought the meet would be canceled because of rain. I could not reach
the event organizers by phone so I got into my car and headed for the
high school.
As I got close to the campus, cars had to slow down to cross huge
puddles in the street. I took a glance down a side street and saw a
small neighborhood with a big drainage problem.
After finding a safe place to park, I saw a man with a stick trying to
clear the drain next to his home. Although I like to fish, I do not own
hip waders, so me and my running shoes walked right into the knee-high
water to get an angle showing the drain and flooded neighborhood.
After taking several photos, I got back in my car and drove to the high
school. The track meet was canceled.
