NBC Network Upfront.JPGI first interviewed Jenny McCarthy in 1994 during a luncheon at the Playboy Mansion to announce she was the Playmate of the Year. She told me the thing she loved to do most was read to children. She didn't say it but I'm sure she also liked long walks on the beach and sensitive men.

McCarthy's been busy since then with TV, movie and book projects. She's the new host of the NBC reality show "Love in the Wild." It's one of those programs where good looking people are thrown together in some odd place with the hope someone will fall in love. Think of these shows as speed dating televised.

McCarthy looks like the kind of person who has probably had a few dates over the years. Who am I kidding? She's never bought a drink for herself a day in her life. That doesn't mean her dates have all gone wonderfully. In fact, she calls it "dating hell."

Maybe some good can come from her bad dates. McCarthy offers a few tips for women when they are dating someone new.

"On your first date, keep an eye on how your man treats the service industry - your waitress, your waiter, the valet person. You can kind of see someone bleed through, if you know what I mean. If they're snappy or rude or not respectful to people that are trying to help you out, I take that as a big red flag and that person doesn't usually get a second date. That's a quick tip," McCarthy says.

Should you continue to date the person for the few months or weeks, McCarthy's next litmus test is to go on a weekend trip.

"Spending at least three days somewhere you can again see true self even if it comes out for five minutes somewhere in those three days. So that's usually how I keep going or end it immediately and it seems to have done me well like I'm getting rid of the bad guys quick that way," McCarthy says.

arrow.bmp Today's announcement of the CW Network's 2012-2013 TV lineup defines the approach the struggling network is using to draw viewers. The lineup will feature program aimed at young women and sci-fi fans. In a few cases - such as the returning "Vampire Diaries' or the new "Beauty and the Beast" - the programs should appeal to both fan bases.

The CW also continues its philosophy that nothing is funny on the network as there again will be no comedies in the lineup.

New dramas being added are: "Arrow," action series based on the Green Arrow comic book starring Stephen Amell; "Emily Owens, M.D." has Mamie Gummer playing a young doctor; and "Beauty and the Beast" is an updated story of the classic love story.

Shows getting bounced from the CW schedule include "The Secret Circle," "Ringer," "H8R" and "One Tree Hill."

Following is The CW's 2012-2013 primetime schedule:

Film Tim Burton.JPG One of the best things about Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" is all of the great music in the film. I'm not just talking about the soundtrack by Danny Elfman but there also are tunes from such great performers as The Moody Blues and Iggy Pop.

My enjoyment of the music might come from the fact Burton and I are about the same age. In talking about the music of early '70s -- when the film is set -- Burton points out about what an interesting time it was musically and how he became a fan.

"I must have been quite ill that year because I just remember that music on the AM radio. Being sick and having a fever and hearing all of that kind of music on the AM radio over and over again," Burton says.

It was a time when radio stations would play the mind-blowing work of Alice Cooper and the pop tunes of The Carpenters.

"It felt strange at the time and still feels strange. The quality of music went from cheesy pop to hard core stuff. I remember Alice Cooper being a strong influence on me at the time. And he still looks the same which is very scary," Burton says.

Burton got to thank Cooper as the rockstar makes an appearance in the movie.

CSI MIAMI.JPG CBS has such a strong lineup the network has ordered only four new series for the 2012-2013 season. They include three dramas -- "Elementary," "Vegas," "Made in Jersey" -- and the comedy "Partners. The new shows join 19 returning series.

The biggest change is the cancelation of "CSI: Miami." Network executives have been talking for months about losing one or more of the shows from the "CSI" franchise. Keep an eye on "CSI:NY" as it probably will be one of the next shows to go.

CBS is moving "Two and a Half Men" from its longtime home on Mondays to air behind "Big Bang Theory" on Thursdays. Considering the failures that have been in that 8:30 p.m. time slot, this is a strong move.

Other CBS shows getting the ax were the freshman series "How To Be a Gentleman," "Unforgettable" and "A Gifted Man." "Rob" and "NYC 22" also got booted. There's no word on the fate of "Rules of Engagement."

As for the new shows, "Elementary" is a contemporary look at detective Sherlock Holmes in New York City starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu while "Vegas" has Dennis Quaid playing a Las Vegas sheriff who battled the mob in the '60s.

Janet Montgomery plays a first-year lawyer in "Made in Jersey." And, "Partners" is a comedy about two very different life-long best friends and business partners and their significant others. It stars David Krumholtz and Michael Urie.

"Undercover Boss" will return later in the year.

The new 2012-2013 schedule is as follows:

wood_pre.jpgOne of the interesting things about animation is how often there are no physical similarities between the voice talent and their on-screen character. Take a look at Ray Winstone who voiced Beowulf in the CGI film of the same name if you want to see a big difference.

That kind of contrast struck me when Elijah Wood walked into the small conference room at the DisneyToon Studios. The actor - best known for his role in all three of the "Lord of the Rings" films - stands only 5-feet-6. He might be scrappy, but Wood doesn't have enough weight on him to make it appear that he would be a physical threat.tron 2_pre.jpg

And yet, Wood is the voice of one of the tallest, sleekest and toughest characters to come along in years with the new Disney XD series "Tron: Uprising." The series, that takes place between the first and second "Tron" features, has Wood's character, Beck, trying to show all the programs who live on the grid that the legacy of Tron lives. He wants to inspire them to fight against the new tyrant taking over their CG world.

A sneak preview of the animated series will air at 9:30 p.m. May 18 before settling into its regular time slot of 9 p.m. Thursdays starting June 7.

"The heart of Beck is that while they are all programs, there's something very human about him," Wood says. "There's something pure about his intent."

Wood was only 1 when the first "Tron" was released. What made the original film stand out was the unique computer animation used to create the computer world where the characters lived and fought. This new version also uses a new animation style that is an Anime Deco - a mix of Art Deco and Japanese Anime. All of the characters appear to be pencil-thin giants.

bach_pre.jpg The stay was short for Brent, the latest local representative on "The Bachelorette."

The Fresno resident was not one of the 19 bachelors given a rose by Emily Maynard during the first ceremony in Monday night's season opener. I guess showing up wearing a name tag is not the way to a woman's heart.

He joins previous "The Bachelorette" contestants Ryan Park and Kasey Kahl as those who failed to find love in front of TV cameras.

127960_GROUP_01r5_pre.jpg ABC is looking with the new lineup for the 2012-2013 season to continue the winning ways it found with its 2011-2012 TV season when it launched five successful shows. This season, the network will add five new programs to the lineup - two comedies and three dramas.

The most interesting move is the shift of "Revenge" to the 9 p.m. Sunday time slot previously inhabited by "Desperate Housewives." It looked like "GCB" would take over that slot but ABC axed the new series and now "Revenge" gets the prime spot.

Several series won't be returning. ABC canceled "Man Up!" and "Charlie's Angels" a long time ago and "Pan Am" didn't take off for the network. "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Work It," "Wipeout," "Missing," "The River" and "Cougar Town" have also been given the boot.

Here's a look at the new ABC shows and the network's fall schedule:

GCB.JPG There's no official word on what CBS, ABC and the CW have planned for the 2012-2013 TV season, but here's an unofficial look at what the networks will be dropping.

CBS canceled "How to Be a Gentleman" weeks after it launched. Also on the list to get the boot are "A Gifted Man," "Rob," "Unforgettable," "NYC 22" and veteran cop drama "CSI: Miami." No word on the what's happening with "Rules of Engagement."

ABC dumped "Man Up!" and "Charlie's Angels" a long time ago. "Pan Am" also didn't take off for the network.

The surprise is that "GCB" won't be back. It looked like the successor to "Desperate Housewives" but now both shows are gone.

Also leaving the lineup will be "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Work It," "Missing" and "The River." "Cougar Town" leaves ABC for new life on the cable channel TBS.

"H8R" died early for the CW and viewers knew this was the last season for "One Tree Hill." Add to the departing list "The Secret Circle" and "Ringer."

kaling.JPG The FOX Network has announced the 2012-2013 lineup and it includes two new comedies and one new drama.

On the comedy side, "The Mindy Project" stars Mindy Kaling as an OB/GYN navigating the tricky waters of her personal and professional lives. "Ben and Kate" stars newcomer Dakota Johnson and Nat Faxon as a pair of odd-couple siblings. They will join "Raising Hope" and "New Girl" for a Tuesday night comedy block.

The drama "The Mob Doctor" features Jordana Spiro as a life-saving surgeon caught between her promising medical career and her family's debt to Chicago's Southside mob.

To make way for the new shows, FOX handed out a few pink slips. Of the five new shows the network launched for the 2011-2012 season, only "New Girl" and "The X-Factor" return. The highly anticipated "Terra Nova" has gone the way of the dinosaurs as has "I Hate My Teenage Daughter" and "Allen Gregory." Also canceled were "Alcatraz," "The Finder," "Napoleon Dynamite" and "Breaking In." This goes along with the earlier announcement that "House" was ending this year.

FOX has a few mid-season shows in the wings including the Kevin Bacon drama "The Following" and the comedy "The Goodwin Games" starring Scott Foley and Becki Newton. Bacon plays an ex-FBI agent called back to duty to track down a serial killer. The comedy follows three siblings who have to jump through hoops to get the family inheritance.

"Glee" will be back and moves to Thursdays.

This is what the FOX 2012-2013 primetime lineup will look like in the fall:

bachelorette_pre.jpg "The Bachelorette" 9:30 p.m., KFSN (Channel 30.1): The latest lovesick representative from the Central San Joaquin Valley begins his quest to find love on national television with the season debut of "The Bachelorette."

A press release announcing the names of the 25 bachelors who will try to win the heart of single mom Emily Maynard lists "Brent, 41, a technology salesman from Fresno." Brent reveals on the ABC website that his favorite group activity is "pulling out the boat in the summer and loading everyone up spending the day on the lake. Soccer, golf, etc." Brent calls himself a closet romantic whose motto is "never give up."

Brent was born in Midland, Texas.

Maybe he'll have better luck than the past two local contestants on "The Bachelorette" -- Ryan Park and Kasey Kahl.
