Welcome to another installment of Post No Bills. Below, you can find all the Fresno concert, club and event fliers you could ever want, all in one place.
As always, we welcome contributions from bands, artists, venues, promoters and regular joes. If you've got a flier you want included, send the link to mosegueda@fresnobee.com.
NOTE: I'm on vacation starting today, so no Post No Bills next week. Read this one good.
Oh snap, guys, have you heard the Swedes are taking us over for the next week? And by that, I mean the people and the movies.
Tonight is the start of Kingsburg Swedish Festival, the popular annual celebration of the culture of Sweden. There's traditional dancing, smorgasbord, costumes, all that kinda stuff. It runs through Saturday night.
Next Thursday is the ninth Swede Fest, which has nothing to do with Sweden and is actually about movies. It's an interesting turn of Swedish fate (or maybe a conspiracy?) that these two events lined up in the same week.
After all that build-up, the press conference, the reveal that Van Halen was coming back to Fresno and even a street name-change comes this news: The Van Halen concert, scheduled for Aug. 28 at Save Mart Center, is now being postponed.
Per concert promoter Live Nation:
The Van Halen show at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California will be temporarily postponed. Future dates to be announced. The on sale, originally scheduled for Monday, May 21 at 10 AM, is postponed. Refunds are available at point of purchase.
The postponement signals something fishy in Van Halen land. The band ditched a number of dates, not just Fresno. No statement from Van Halen yet, though.
UPDATE: More info, including comments from Save Mart Center management, at fresnobee.com.
We're less than a month away from the premiere of "Long Live the Wild Hare," the documentary about beloved (and fallen) Fresno rock station KRZR. The film -- put together by ex-KRZR jock Rick Roddam and Fadeaway J Films -- debuts at Tower Theatre on June 16. Get more info here and watch the newest trailer below. It features Chris Daniel and Jenn Lipp, among others.
To mark the first three months of my radio show, I put together this mix featuring some of my favorite songs that have aired on Ozmosis. There are some bands you might know, some you probably don't. There's upbeat, catchy indie rock, quieter folk-ish songs and other funky stuff. Listen through the widget below or on Spotify. I've been told it's good work music. Oh, and of course, be sure to tune in to new installments of Ozmosis every Sunday at 9 p.m. on New Rock 104.1.
Fulton 55 gets a visit from on-the-rise pop singer Rachel Platten tonight, best known for her hit single "1,000 Ships." Platten sings, plays piano and even beatboxes sometimes. She's a sort of female Jason Mraz. I interview Platten last week -- you can read it here -- and she talked her recent success, her love for hip-hop and how she uses Instagram. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets cost $10-$12.
Downtown Fresno has a new leader and a new logo/marketing campaign, so you might be expecting some big things down there. Well, how's this for big? The Downtown Fresno Partnership is raising money by offering people the chance to rappel down the city's best known and tallest building, the Pacific Southwest Building.
Downtown revitalization from the Spiderman playbook? Sweet.
"Where else are you going to see people rappelling down a 15-story building besides downtown Fresno?" says Kate Borders, who was imported late last year from Milwaukee to take over president/CEO of what is now the Downtown Fresno Partnership.
This will happen at a June 16 event called Over the Edge. People who want to climb down the building need to raise $1,000 through pledges from friends/family/etc -- kinda like Kickstarter.
Money raised will be used to fund future projects from the Fresno Downtown Partnership, specifically an outdoor ice rink that's being eyed for the 2012 holiday season. (That sounds cool too, doesn't it?)
Because you're probably wondering: Yes, an outside company that specifically handles building-scaling is behind this, making sure everything is safe and proper. If you want to sign up to potentially to go Over the Edge, go here. If you want to sponsor someone, then go here.
We often gives shouts to the headliners that come in and play a one-night only show. But we can't forget about the musicians who playing week in and week out, building followings at local venues. Like tonight, for instance.
DB & The Struggle play reggae/ska at Bobby Salazar's in the Tower:
For those of you bemoaning the lack of more modern acts on this year's Big Fresno Fair concert schedule, two more acts have been added. And they're both pretty current.
Rock band Chevelle plays Friday, Oct. 12 and rapper Tyga (he of "Rack City" fame) performs the next night, Oct. 13. Tickets for both shows cost $15-$20.
Scroll down for more fair concerts, ticket prices and how you can buy tickets before they go on sale the public.
