It's unavoidable.

You know what's totally avoidable, though? Jay-Z songs, at least for Miss Miley. Check out her answer when she's asked in an interview which of Jay-Z's songs she's singing about (skip to 2:55 for the response):

Holy crap. Did anyone else know this girl sounds like a 50-year old truck stop waitress with a two-pack-a-day habit? How did that little blond girl not run from the room crying when Miley barked at her with that paint-peeling voice that she was wearing her Halloween costume ("I don't dress like this every day. I'm not crazy. Now, you want those eggs scrambled or sunny side up? *coughhackcough*").

UPDATE: We have our winners: Robert Boro and Lauren Bagato. Thanks for playing!

ORIGINAL ENTRY: This is absolutely last-minute, folks, and a golden opportunity for those of you hanging out here on a late Friday afternoon. I have FOUR tickets to give away to the Artists' Repertory Theatre production of "All in the Timing," which continues this weekend at the Severance Building. (This is a combination of the two wildly popular Rogue Festival presentations.) Tickets are good for the 8 p.m. Friday, 8 p.m. Saturday or 2 p.m. Sunday performances. I'll give two tickets to the FIRST commenter to this post and two tickets to the THIRD commenter. The tickets will be available at the door. Winner will be notified in an e-mail, so leave a real one. No repeat comments. You're ineligible if you've won something in the past 30 days. We won't post any comments until we have a winner. Complete rules after the jump.

1. THROW UP THE ROC: You should already know by now -- Jay-Z is in town on Saturday night, his first ever Fresno concert, and one of only two Cali concerts he's doing this year. It oughta be fresh. You can read more about Jay-Z, and why he matters beyond just rap, in this story from today's paper. I also did an interview with his young protégé J. Cole, who is one of the show's openers along with Wale and N.E.R.D.

Afterward, don't forget that the afterparty at Aqua Shi should be hopping too -- with Jay-Z's DJ Neil Armstrong spinning.

2. ROCK WITH THE ELEPHANT: I'm also quite excited to see Cage the Elephant on Sunday night at Audie's Olympic. You know them best for their hit song "Ain't No Rest for the Wicked." They're a band on the way up, so see 'em at a small club while you can.

3. NOT SO SLIM PICKENS: Another great show this weekend is with folk singer Langhorne Slim, who is in Visalia at The Cellar Door on Saturday night. Dude has some great songs. "Worries" is even getting a lot of rotation on an insurance commercial these days. If Jay-Z wasn't here the same night ...

4. LAUGH YOUR DONKEY OFF: This is also a big weekend for comedy shows, as you'll see from the fliers below. You have your pick between shows at Thai Palms, Tokyo Garden or a big deal over at Chukchansi Park.
5. HEAD TO STARLINE: Some good stuff at Starline this weekend, starting with Keeney's CD release show. He was The Bee's Artist You Should Know last week.
I saw some interesting shows last night. Feel free to add your own observations about these and other venues in the comments section.

GALLERY 25
Robert Weibel is known for his "gunpowder art," and his full show at Gallery 25 -- he was scheduled to display with Karen LeCocq but she had to drop out -- is, dare we say, explosive. He has a couple of works titled "Delta Smelt," which I'm assuming is a reference to a political powder keg of a Valley water issue (sorry, I have to ease up on the munitions puns), which are stunning visually, with the mixture of gunpowder and metallic leaf making a shimmering impact on the paper. I love how Weibel organized his show, too -- to the extent that representations of birds actually seem to "flock" up a corner wall, as if they're ready to take flight. There will be a reception 1-4 p.m. Sunday at Gallery 25. The show continues through Nov. 29.

DeROUCHEY CREATIVE DESIGN STUDIO
A fun, different ArtHop stop -- definitely with a youthful vibe. Most, if not all, of the artists appeared to be recent Fresno State graduates, and the crowd in this warehouse district -- just down the street from the Chris Sorensen Studio -- brought the average ArtHop age WAY down. I ran into Fresno State art prof Doug Hansen, who was proud as a papa of his former students. One of my favorites of the bunch: Uriel Tekunoff's surrealist-style painting of a bearded man. This was a one-night-only show.

-----------------------------------------

FIG TREE GALLERY
Mary Maughelli is a venerated member of the Fresno arts scene, and what I like about her newest show, "Looking Inward," is the liveliness of her works and the emotional intensity. Maughelli often focuses on girls and women in her works, and in this show -- which consists of collages of photos of her sister and eldest grandniece combined with the artist's trademark figurative sketches and great works from art history -- she portrays the sweetness of innocence and the vibrancy of growing up. (Ah, to be 9 again and have a never-ending future stretching before you.)

In her "Female Portraits and Memories 2," Maughelli highlights a photo of her grandniece in a white communion dress, a classic symbol of innocence, and then surrounds her with classical symbols of emerging womanhood, in this case repetitions of "Botticelli's Birth of Venus," along with line drawings of figures capturing a sense of kinetic energy.

What makes it even more compelling is the day-glo color palette Maughelli has chosen for the show: lots of bright pinks, yellows, reds and oranges. It's almost as if the place vibrates with color. She used Twinrocker paper with irregular deckled edges for this series of collages, giving them a jagged, assertive feel.

The best part is that Maughelli's sister was there for the opening. It was touching to see a younger version of her sister in the works, then standing alongside proudly beside her sibling. The show runs at Fig Tree Gallery through Nov. 29.

----------------------------------------

CORRIDOR 2122
Thomas Evans Howell has a solo show titled "Naked Secrets: The Pencil and the Mac," which treats the nude female figure in very different ways. One side of the gallery is devoted to Howell's life-size pencil sketches of nudes. Across the gallery on the opposite wall, he dives into computer-generated graphic images that incorporate photos, drawings and art history examples in a technological collage. Even though the computer-collage theme seems a little overdone to me these days, there's a shimmering translucence to some of his computer-generated prints -- and a feisty sense of provocation, such as in his work "Mary," which juxtaposes a seductive nude with the background of a cathedral. There's a reception for the show 12-4 Saturday at Corridor 2122, and it runs through Nov. 29.

DeRouchey Creative Design Studio, at 1803 S. Van Ness Ave., for the third year opens its doors for a group show by local artists. In "Variations of Flight," the emphasis is on the process by which objects move either through the air within or beyond our atmosphere. The show includes digital photography, works in acrylic and mixed media on canvas, granite and stone.

Fulton's Folly Antique Collective, at 920 E. Olive Ave., features a reception for Brazil native Christina Motta, whose professional career began in 1969 with drawings and oil paintings. She has shown her works in <NO1>various<NO>collective exhibitions and more than 25 individual exhibitions in Brazil and other south American countries.

"Conception," by Uriel J. Tekunoff, Paint

-----------------------------------

JULIANA HARRIS' "14 WATERFALLS" AT THE WARNORS THEATER

From the press release:

Artist Juliana Harris presents 14 Waterfalls in the windows of Warnors Theatre, 1400 Fulton St., Fresno, on ArtHop, Thursday, Nov. 5th, from 5 - 8 p.m.

Harris, who is well known for her semi-abstracted oil paintings of water, has created 14 mixed-media images of waterfalls visible from the sidewalk, in 9-foot tall windows: eight on Tuolumne St. and six on Fulton St.

Harris says the challenges presented by the windows project were daunting. "My palette tends to be subdued and my work is detailed and subtle. None of these qualities are appropriate for large windows that demand high-contrast imagery viewable from a distance.

"At first, I was definitely out of my comfort zone," she says. "I asked myself if I could create something that met all the demands of the space and remain true to my own aesthetic. The parameters of this project are so far from my world in the studio."

Her first hurdle was to comprehend the theatre's massive physical dimensions, the proportions of the windows, their rhythmic placement in the architecture, and the wealth of decorative elements surrounding them. "The building's façade is so extravagant, what could I put in those windows that would stand out in such surroundings?" she asked.

Beyond the physical considerations lay the intangibles. How would the sun's strong southwestern exposure affect the artwork? Would sunlight and radiant heat fade, warp or shrink the materials touching the glass? To what degree would reflections distort or enhance the images behind the glass?

Next, Harris focused on the aesthetic questions: would her images be united thematically or standalone? How would the windows' tall narrow dimensions influence her choice of subject? Would one giant image be segmented throughout all the windows, or would each window frame a distinctly different scene?

After months of mulling over her topic, Harris chose waterfalls because the subject works well with the windows' proportions, and she could continue her interest in conveying the aesthetic shapes and feelings of water¬.

"As a public art project, I like the idea of focusing on the most hotly debated topic in this Valley. For growers, water is the difference between life and death. Waterfalls not only represent power; they are power. Their uncontrollable force is dependent upon a lasting source. There are many metaphors one can draw; suffice it to say, waterfalls are icons worthy of contemplation, and they are large, bold, vertical shapes-perfect for the windows."

Once she established her subject, she realized she could not take her usual approach of applying paint to canvas. The cost of materials would have been prohibitive. "I experimented with everything," she claims, "tree branches, plastic tarps, fabric, foil, anything I could get my hands on that was large, plentiful and either free or cheap."

Finally, she settled on using plain paper and entered the mindset of large shapes, simple forms, high contrast and exaggerated detail to ensure the images would be visible from a distance. The specific mixed-media methods she employed are explained, for the public, in two window boxes to the immediate left and right of the theatre marquee.

Because the sun sets at 5:07 p.m. on Nov. 5,th art hoppers are encouraged to bring flashlights, headlamps, lanterns, light sabers and other forms of portable light to illuminate the windows from the sidewalk. As the winter season of lights begins, Harris's ArtHop installation promises to be a fun event for the whole family

Warnors Windows is a public art project of the California Contemporary Art Collective, of which Harris is a founding member.

DCAC organizers write:

Ashleigh Sumner is excited to make her gallery show debut with the painting series, "Abstract Expression Through Urban Inspiration" on Thursday, November 5th at the Downtown Community Arts Collective (DCAC) in Fresno, CA.

Sumner, a self - taught artist living in Los Angeles, received her B.A. in Theatre Arts from Western Carolina University before moving West to pursue an acting career in stage, film, and television. Sumner most recently starred in the indie film, "And Then Came Lola" featured at Fresno's 20thAnnual Reel Pride Film Festival.

In her paintings, Sumner attempts to incorporate the implied visual of densely populated urban landscapes with the raw, gritty texture of industrial areas. With a palette knife, she applies several layers of bold color by scraping paint across wood panels or canvas. Sumner then incorporates strong accents of black through out the piece. Finally, resin is introduced into the process to render added depth and to convey a modern, veneer surface o the artwork.

With the help of the DCAC, Ashleigh Sumner is happily expanding her creative pursuits beyond the stage and to the canvas. Please join us for an evening of food, drink, music, art and celebration at the DCAC (754 P Street, Fresno CA 93721) on November 5th @ 5:00pm to 8:00 pm with an Artist's After Party from 8:00pm to 10:00 pm.

There is no cost to attend. Please bring a friend and support Fresno's thriving art scene.

Portions of proceeds generated from the sale of Ashleigh Sumner paintings will benefit the DCAC and Fresno's Marjaree Mason Center.
