Concert News: Fair adds Weezer

The Big Fresno Fair added another concert to its 2012 schedule: alternative rock band Weezer.

The band will perform at the Paul Paul Theater on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Ticket prices will be announced soon and go on-sale Aug. 6. An exclusive pre-sale for members of the Big Fair Fan Club starts July 30. You can join the e-mail list for free here.

Weezer is known for its popular songs "Buddy Holly," "Say It Ain't So" and "Beverly Hills." They're the latest in a series of concerts announced for this year's fair. For a complete list, read this story and blog post from Mike Oz.

You can win tickets to see 'Snow White and the Huntsman'

The summer movie season is in full swing and one of the next big films headed to local theaters will be the June 1 release "Snow White and the Huntsman."

It features "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart and "Thor" hunk Chris Hemsworth in a dark version of the fairty tale.

Loyal readers of the Beehive know we try to make the wait shorter. We have 10 pairs of tickets to see an advance screening of the film at 7 p.m. May 29 at the Manchester Stadium Theaters. You won't have to wait in a long line or show up days in advance. If you win a pair of tickets, all you have to do is show up that evening and head to a reserved seat.

Here's what you have to do. Send me a comment of which fairy tale you would like become the next big screen release. A random drawing of those comments will determine the 10 winners.

Comments must be posted by 10 a.m. Friday, May 25. You will be notified if you are a winner.

On TV tonight: 'House'

"House," 9 p.m. KMPH (Channel 26.1): After eight seasons, the misadventures of Dr. Gregory House come to an end. The pill-popping doc will see his last patient with tonight's series finale.

Although the FOX series fell into a pattern of 52 minutes of the team incorrectly guessing what was wrong with the patient of the week and then in the last minutes House hitting upon the solution, the show offered plenty of interesting medical mysteries. I have to admit there were lots of times when the diagnosis made no sense to me but teaching medicine was never the point of the show.

The series was a character study played out against a medical background. Each week's medical malady was never as interesting as watching the way House manipulated people. He occasionally showed his softer side but rapidly hid it from view as if such emotions would be looked at as a sign of weakness.

Laurie's performance has been the kind that should have been showered with Emmy wins. He's been nominated five times but never won the award. Maybe the series finale will be enough to get him the honor he so richly deserves.

There will be a one-hour retrospective starting at 8 p.m.

SNL says farewell to Kristen Wiig

There's been rumors for awhile that Kristin Wiig is leaving "Saturday Night Live," and at the closing of last night's episode, those rumors were proven with an emotional send-off of the actress.

Host Mick Jagger started a graduation sketch, saying to Wiig, "I'd like to take a moment to say goodbye to one particular student who is leaving this summer ..." Then, in what became a bit of a weepy-eyed moment, each cast member got a turn to dance Wiig off. Check it out:

Wiig was a SNL cast member for seven years. It's rumored Andy Samberg and Jason Sudeikis also are leaving the show, and this week Samberg did a "Lazy Sunday 2" digital short that some are saying was his send-off:

Holy crap, Matthew Fox

Last we saw Matthew Fox, he was doing his best turkey-neck acting move on "Lost" (seriously, could the guy emote without punctuating each sentence with a head bob?).

Then there were some seriously unflattering stories about him punching a lady bus driver in the babymaker, and, last week, reports of a D.U.I. for Dr. Jack "We have to go back!" Shepard.

Fox is playing a crazed villain in a movie called Alex Cross, and judging by the first images released, it isn't hard to imagine that perhaps Fox has stayed in character. You be the judge.

Get your s**t together, Matthew Fox. You're making Kate glum (er).

The Wall Street Journal is calculating that thanks to today's IPO -- which has been covered by the media with a D-Day frenzy -- Facebook chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's stock in the company is worth $19.23 billion (as of 1:23 p.m PST; see cool widget below). Playing up the 99% angle, we indulge in a Friday afternoon fantasy:

What would you do with all that money?

My mind reels at the sum, but my list includes a great apartment in Manhattan, never flying in the middle seat of economy class ever again, loads of money to charity/loved ones, and a beautiful state-of-the-art performing arts complex in Fresno complete with endowed professional non-profit theater company and numerous Equity jobs for actors.
