534877_640716519285790_802242147_nPop quiz: What are you doing this weekend (aside from nursing a taco hangover)? If you don’t have an immediate answer, I’ve compiled a little list to help. It’s the Beehive’s weekly music roundup. A little something we call … BANDGEEEEEK!!

FRIDAY:

Win tickets to: Michael Jackson HIStory

Kenny Wizz as Michael Jackson9Kenny Wizz (or Wizz as he’s known) has done the moonwalk more times than Michael Jackson ever did. As the world’s No. 1 Jackson impersonator, Wizz has performed as Michael since 1984 and done shows all over the world. He estimates he’s done 15,000 shows in Las Vegas alone.

Right now, he’s in the midst of a two-month U.S. tour followed by trips to Australia and Indonesia. Wizz’ tribute “Michael Jackson HIStory” comes to the Saroyan Theatre on Friday. The show is a recreation of what Jackson did live Jackson — a two-hour performance covering 22 songs from pop icon’s catalog of music.

And the Beehive will be giving away tickets to three lucky readers. Enter to win by leaving a comment below. We want to know what’s your favorite Jackson song and why. For my money, you can’t get better than “Dirty Diana,” which probably tells you how old I am. The contest will run through 5 p.m. Wednesday (June 19). Winners will be chosen at random and notified via email. These are actual, physical tickets, so they will need to be picked up at The Fresno Bee office (1226 E. St.) before 5 p.m. Friday.

Good luck.

See the full contest rules (and a video of Wizz) below.

Your guide to eating & drinking this weekend

ICZoofarilogo2012.png

We all know this weekend is going to be hot. But did you also know it’s got a handful of notable food- and drink-related events you might want to check out. Here’s a look:

FIG FEST: The annual (and popular) Fig Fest is Saturday at Fresno State. The Bee had a nice piece Wednesday about the various uses of the fig. If that gets you motivated to taste some figs, then get all the event info and head out there.

ZOOFARI: Another popular annual event is Chaffee Zoo’s Ice Cream Zoofari. It’s a cool relief considering the expected temperatures. It’s happening Saturday night after the zoo closes and includes all you-can-eat ice cream, sherbet and frozen yogurt. More info here. This one sells out, so hurry if you want tickets.

VISALIA CRAFT BREW FEST: Visalia jumps into the beer festival game with the first Visalia Craft Brew Fest happening at Mooney Grove Park. It features close to three dozen breweries, including locals such as Tioga-Sequoia and Brewbakers and out-of-towners like Firestone Walker and Sudwerks. More info here.

HAVE LUNCH WITH JOE CROSS: Cross, a juicing advocate, healthy-living inspirer and star of the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” visits Fresno on Sunday. You can eat with him at a $50 gourmet vegan fund-raiser lunch at Organic Fresno and/or catch his free lecture at Liberty Theatre at 3:30 p.m. More here.

Taco Truck Throwdown 2: Nominate your faves

TTT2-LOGO.jpg

You should know by now that Taco Truck Throwdown 2 is happening Aug. 30 at Chukchansi Park. Yes, we’re still a month away, we’re currently courting taco trucks to participate and, obviously, we want the best ones.

This is where you, the taco-eating public, come in: What taco trucks would you like to see there this year? Shout ‘em out in the comments (with as much location/contact info as you have) or e-mail me, if you prefer.

Fresno Tweetup Goes Wild

Tweet_up_zoo_final.jpg

The Beehive and Chaffee Zoo are partnering for Fresno Tweetup Goes Wild. It’s a chance for local Twitter users to meet and mingle inside the zoo, at a discounted, after-hours event. It’s our sequel to last summer’s Great Fresno Tweetup.

This event is Saturday, April 24, from 5-8 p.m. Chaffee Zoo will be closed to the public, so it’s an exclusive event for local Twitter users. Tickets will cost $5, and kids 10 and younger are free with their parent(s).

There will be food, drinks, games and live music — all of which you can expect more details right here on The Beehive as the event gets closer.

A few notes on how the Tweetup will work:

  • You MUST message either Chaffee Zoo (@fresnozoo) or The Beehive (@fresnobeehive) on Twitter to get on the list for $5 tickets.
  • You’ll pick up your tickets along with a nametag at the will-call table before the event.
  • The Zoo says all its usual animals will be out during the Tweetup. We’ve also got a few fun things scheduled — like a Twitpic Scavenger Hunt.
  • Mark any and all Tweets about the event with the hashtag #wildfresno. And follow that hashtag for all the chatter about Fresno Tweetup Goes Wild.
  • If you’re not Twitter, you’ve got plenty of time to join and get into the swing of things. Be sure to follow @fresnobeehive and @fresnozoo first thing.
