Remember that time downtown Fresno got turned into a beach for the weekend, with streets shut down, sand hauled in, pools set up, live music, DJs, volleyball courts and all kinds of drinks? Well, it’s happening again.
Today, Club One Casino sent over details about its second Summer Splash Beach Party, happening Aug. 31-Sept. 3 (aka Labor Day weekend). Scope out the flier below and read through all the details after the jump. I’m told an list of DJs and bands is coming soon.
We all know this weekend is going to be hot. But did you also know it’s got a handful of notable food- and drink-related events you might want to check out. Here’s a look:
FIG FEST: The annual (and popular) Fig Fest is Saturday at Fresno State. The Bee had a nice piece Wednesday about the various uses of the fig. If that gets you motivated to taste some figs, then get all the event info and head out there.
ZOOFARI: Another popular annual event is Chaffee Zoo’s Ice Cream Zoofari. It’s a cool relief considering the expected temperatures. It’s happening Saturday night after the zoo closes and includes all you-can-eat ice cream, sherbet and frozen yogurt. More info here. This one sells out, so hurry if you want tickets.
VISALIA CRAFT BREW FEST: Visalia jumps into the beer festival game with the first Visalia Craft Brew Fest happening at Mooney Grove Park. It features close to three dozen breweries, including locals such as Tioga-Sequoia and Brewbakers and out-of-towners like Firestone Walker and Sudwerks. More info here.
HAVE LUNCH WITH JOE CROSS: Cross, a juicing advocate, healthy-living inspirer and star of the documentary “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” visits Fresno on Sunday. You can eat with him at a $50 gourmet vegan fund-raiser lunch at Organic Fresno and/or catch his free lecture at Liberty Theatre at 3:30 p.m. More here.
You should know by now that Taco Truck Throwdown 2 is happening Aug. 30 at Chukchansi Park. Yes, we’re still a month away, we’re currently courting taco trucks to participate and, obviously, we want the best ones.
This is where you, the taco-eating public, come in: What taco trucks would you like to see there this year? Shout ‘em out in the comments (with as much location/contact info as you have) or e-mail me, if you prefer.
The Beehive and Chaffee Zoo are partnering for Fresno Tweetup Goes Wild. It’s a chance for local Twitter users to meet and mingle inside the zoo, at a discounted, after-hours event. It’s our sequel to last summer’s Great Fresno Tweetup.
This event is Saturday, April 24, from 5-8 p.m. Chaffee Zoo will be closed to the public, so it’s an exclusive event for local Twitter users. Tickets will cost $5, and kids 10 and younger are free with their parent(s).
There will be food, drinks, games and live music — all of which you can expect more details right here on The Beehive as the event gets closer.

It’s another Much Ado About Thursday — you know, the first Thursday of the month, when ArtHop undoubtedly collides with many other local happenings, resulting in an abundance of things to do. Here’s a rundown. Feel free to add anything I missed or shout out what you’re doing in the comments.
ARTHOP: You all know what the first Thursday of the month means — hopping art galleries in the Tower and downtown. Here’s a graphic sampling of what’s going on. You can get more ArtHop options here. We’d love to hear some of your recommendations.
As in the list of people coming soon to Fresno. Comedian Griffin, star of the reality show “My Life on the D List,” will perform July 25 at Saroyan Theatre. Fun fact: She’s the living, breathing idol of our own Heather McLane.
