Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

Other than helping clean up a river.

1. SEND STRANGE VINE OFF IN STYLE
Strange Vine is my favorite band in Fresno right now. Fact is, they’re a lot of peoples’ favorite band right now. In fact, I gushed about them in the paper today and said they should totally open for The Black Keys (like that FB page, y’all!). But let’s focus on the now: Strange Vine is taking off for a quick tour through Texas and Nashville and up to NYC. Send them off Saturday night at Audie’s Olympic. Indie rock darlings of the moment Light Thieves are also playing. [More]

2. LIVE THE SCOTTISH LIFE
This weekend offers us a few festival-type activities: Clovis Fest and the Mexican Independence Day celebration on the Fulton Mall being two of them. But only one event has hammer throwing and sheep herding. That’s the 35th Annual Highland Games & Gathering happening Saturday at Kearney Park. If you like kilts and bagpipes, this is where it’s at. 3. DO IT ALL FOR WES BORLAND’S NOOKIE
Tonight’s 16-act, three-stage Rockers Holiday V show at Babylon features headliner Black Light Burns, the side project of Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland. If you know Borland, you know he likes to dress up in odd costumes and facepaint. Let’s just hope one of them is not Fred Durst. [More]

4. PARTY WITH MUSIC, COMEDY AND MAGIC
Tonight Skye Nightclub (the former trainwreck known as Club Rome) has what looks like a pretty cool event: It’s DJ John Magic from B95′s 10-year anniversary party. Magic, you might know, is also the tour DJ for comedian Jo Koy, so Koy is coming to host the party. Fellow B95er Andre Covington starts out the night with some comedy. [More]

5. SEE SOME HIP-HOP
Hip-hoppers, you’ve got a few options to bob your head to: Hot-at-the-moment Bay Area emcee Roach Gigz is at Star Palace tonight with Main Attrakionz and a bunch of others. You can also see Starting Six, Riff Raff, etc. Saturday night at The Glass House. If you want something a little different, consider local dude B. Rawcity and his funky band at The Lamp Post tonight. They impressed at Fuse Fust.

AND ONE MORE: This guy Scott H. Biram seems like he might just blow your mind tonight at Fulton 55. Or break a bottle over your head. Either way, memorable.

and if you’re in the mood for listening to and dancing to some Beatle-tunes, come check out Fresno’s own fave FabFaux: The Beetles. Saturday night at the Starline! (music begins at 9sharp and continues for 3 solid hours of Beatle music. This time, the emphasis is on the music of their psychedelic years.

back in the valley has their cd release show on saturday night @ fulton 55. they’re calling it the California Calliope Spectacle and chris, the singer described the idea for a the show to me as “a mix of a rolling stones show & a travelling snake oil sales barker. it’ll be a hoe down, so bring your hoes down.”

Jo Koy for only $5 bucks? Hell, Andre Covington for only $5 bucks??? (before 8:30)

Kudos to Skye for getting a big show right.
