In addition to the concerts I already recommended.
1. FILL YOUR EARS WITH LOCAL MUSIC
Tonight is the kick off of an interesting campaign by the folks behind Fuse Fest. They’re starting a Fresno Covers Fresno compilation. In short, as the name suggests, it’ll be Fresno musicians covering the music of other Fresno musicians. Hope is for the comp to be done at this time next year. This Tokyo Garden show is the start of fund-raising efforts for Fresno Covers Fresno. [More]
2. OD ON ANIME
This weekend is Fresno’s annual festival celebrating all things anime. It’s Ani-Jam, happening at the Fresno Convention Center. There’s panelists from the anime world, video gaming, board gaming, art displays, cosplay (extra nerd points to you if you know what that is), music, dancing, etc. [More]
3. BE FANATICAL ABOUT THE FINATTICZ
Hot-right-now hip-hop group The Finatticz (of “Don’t Drop That Thun Thun” fame) are in Fresno on Saturday night playing three shows — a type of tour de rap force we rarely see. They’re part of the big Back to School Teen Jam at Blackbeard’s, and then also perform at Kocky’s and Ghaleb’s too.
4. SLAM SOMETHING
Fresno’s monthly slam poetry competition, The Beat Down Slam, is back with its August installment at the Teazer’s downtown location inside the Galleria. Show love to your favorite slammer. The winner gets some cash. [More]
5. WATCH OUT FOR NEON MANIACS
The Central Valley Horror Club has an ongoing event at Full Circle Brewing Co. called “B-Movies and Brews” where it shows a cheesy horror movie and offer up custom drinks. Tonight you can join in. The club is showing “Neon Maniacs,” a 1986 flick about a group of teenagers finding homicidal monsters living in a tower of the Golden Gate Bridge. [More]
