Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

In addition to checking out the Simonian Farms old town and the Baeza concert.

1. SWING BY AUDIE’S
Let’s all give a round of applause for local band Old Tire Swingers, who recently completed a five-month tour that circled the country and put 15,000 miles on its tour van. Now, the group plays its homecoming show at Audie’s Olympic on Saturday with equally-cool local band Poor Man’s Poison, plus Copper & Glass and direct-from-North Carolina, Deep Chatham. Old Tire Swingers play old-time string music and bluegrass, but its members have a history in rock bands, so they’re trying to get people to recognize it’s not just overall and straw hat music. Read my interview with Old Tire Swingers for more. [Tickets]

2. ENTER AUDIAFAUNA
Lots of buzz for tonight’s Nights in the Plaza concert series offering at Arte Americas. It features eclectic Santa Cruz band Audiafauna, which plays an interesting mix of indie rock, folk, electronica, etc, with cello and violin added in for good measure. Their cello player is a Fresno native, so there’s that, if you need a local hook. Also: Dusty Buns will be serving good and NOCO will be dancing. [More]

3. GET YOUR FRUIT
If you love fruit — and who doesn’t? — Saturday brings one of our area’s favorite and most popular fruit events. It’s the Stone Fruit Jubilee at Oasis Garden in Clovis, where 13 local farmers will be serving and selling 60 varieties of organic stone fruit, such as peaches, plums, nectarines, etc. [More]

4. ROLL WITH NOTOWN
Saturday brings another bruising bout from NOtown Roller Derby, who are having a regional rivalry bout with the Tulare-Kings team. If you’ve never seen live roller derby, it’s a lot of fun — and NOtown bouts are free to kids under 10. [More]

5. SOAK UP SOME REGGAE
Young reggae band Sono Vero rolls into Fresno’s Fulton 55 tonight — and when I say young, I mean it. This SoCal group can’t even drink, but they’ve got a soulful reggae sound that’s proven popular, even topping the iTunes reggae charts. Locals White Glove Service help out. [Tickets]

59days.jpgONE MORE: 59 DAYS OF CODE
This isn’t a traditional entertainment option, but it’s something interesting to go and see nonetheless. Saturday is the third annual 59 Days of Code tech conference and competition. Participating programmers had 59 days to develop an application, game, etc.

The finished products get unveiled and the winners gets crowned Saturday. There are also workshops and a keynote from the mayor. Everything is open to the public and free. Read my column in today’s Bee about why it’s an event that matters, even if you’re not a web nerd. [More]
