The hard-hitting, sharp-skating women of NOtown Roller Derby start their home season this weekend, squaring off against the High Country Hellcats (Sonora) in two Saturday night bouts at the Fresno Fairgrounds.
As we’ve done in years past, we’re going to introduce you to members of all the team all week. We start with Hurricane Huckaby.
Real name: Mindy Huckaby
# of years playing roller derby: Three
What is the meaning behind your derby name?
I had a hard time coming up with a derby name. A friend from work actually came up with the name for me. I would tease when I first started that I was more of a tropical storm than a hurricane. As the years go by I have evolved from that tropical storm into Hurricane Huckaby.
What is your signature move on the track? What should the fans be on the lookout for?
I don’t think I have a signature move but big hits are always fun and the crowd loves them! We have some big hitters on NOtown so come on out and check us out!
What injuries have you sustained playing roller derby?
In my first year of derby I hurt my knee in a bout. I pulled a ligament in my left knee and I was off skates for two months. Since then it has been just the usual bumps and bruises.
Aside from skating, what is your involvement in NOtown Roller Derby?
I am also on the production committee, attend league meetings, help with and attend community events.
NOtown has recently been accepted into WFTDA as an apprentice league. What changes do you see happening in NOtown?
Structure. There are definitely changes happening with the structure of the team but its all about the skating. We love playing derby and that is why we are all here.
Other than playing roller derby, what can you be found doing in Fresno?
If I’m not at work I am usually at home hanging out with my dogs. Aside from derby I lead a pretty low-key life.
What is your favorite part about playing roller derby in Fresno?
My teammates are my favorite part of playing derby in Fresno for NOtown. These ladies are great! We have so much fun together and we are really evolving as a team.
What is your advice to someone interested in joining NOtown?
DO IT! Come out and join! It’s fun and good exercise! We have something to offer everyone. GO NOtown!!!
