Classic rock fans are in for a treat tonight, as former Scorpions drummer Herman Rarebell plays the Tower Theatre with his new band. But this isn’t just ANY new band.

Rarebell has put together a new band featuring two local guys. It’s an interesting story I wrote about last Friday in The Bee.

[Rarebell's] Thursday night show at Tower Theatre comes with quite the interesting back story, a rich Fresno angle and a reality TV camera crew.

Let’s start at the beginning. Last year, Rarebell came to California State University, Fresno, to sign copies of his book, “And Speaking of Scorpions,” which he wrote with Fresno State alumnus Michael Krikorian.

Rarebell was originally supposed to speak to the jazz/rock history class taught by Brad Hufft, but instead that part turned into a drum clinic with the university’s assistant professor of music, guitarist Corey Whitehead.

Whitehead assembled a group of local musicians to play Scorpions tunes with Rarebell. About 400 students crowded into Fresno State’s concert hall to hear them play.

Rarebell was so impressed with Whitehead, that he brought the guitar player into a new band. They also recruited Gary O’Meara, a longtime local musician who has played with 51 Aces, among others, to play bass.

blake says:

and yet another fun local angle to that show(now *last* night*): a short guest appearance from that harp/theremin combo that played the Rogue—we played two tunes right smack in the middle of Rarebell’s set—good fun theremin-izing with the fine folks of Metal.
