New bar alert! Tower Sports Club

towersportsbar.jpg

Open a couple weeks now, Tower Sports Club has a lot of people talking.

The bar — the long-in-the-works new watering hole from the last owners of Zapp’s Park — is part of Wishon Row, the hip block of local businesses in the Tower District, where Twee Boutique, The Hashtag and Cafe Corazon reside, among others.

The atmosphere is a cross between a sports bar and a country club, with big TVs and a pool table, but also some funky decor and old music like you might find at your grandma’s house. If your grandma is classy and cool.

Here’s some more on the new spot from The Bee’s Bethany Clough:

A pool table is in the back of the bar. Large TV screens will show big games. The ones in the back will be on all the time, but the ones in the front will show pictures the rest of the time so customers can hear each other talk, says owner and bartender Pete Mejia.

Mejia owned the former Zapp’s Park bar and also tended bar in country clubs, which inspired some of the bar’s design.

And he’s encouraging customers to bring food to eat Tower Sports Club. Already they’ve brought cupcakes from Frosted Cakery next door and pizza from Me-N-Ed’s across the street. Pacifica Pizza and Livingstone’s have delivered to the bar.

“I think this is what people are looking for,” Mejia said. “They want to have a drink … have an espresso and talk to [their] friends.”

Tower Sports Club has a full bar, serves wine and various coffees.

It’s open 2 p.m.-2 a.m. every day. The address is 1294 Wishon Ave.

Since I may well be the grandma you are talking about, what decade is the old music from? 50s? 60s? 70s? I know lots of people who would come out for the old rock n roll and jazz music of that era.
