Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

In addition to this weekend’s Fresno Filmworks’ offerings

1. DON’T SLEEP ON A ROCK NIGHTMARE
Selland Arena rocks again. Thank New Rock 104.1 for Saturday’s Nightmare Before Christmas concert. It features a diverse cast of rock acts: Rise Against, A Day to Remember and Awolnation, who I interviewed for today’s newspaper. [Tix]

2. HAVE A DOWNTOWN CHRISTMAS
Like I told you last week, this weekend brings a number of Christmas events to downtown Fresno. There’s the old favorite — the annual Christmas parade at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Fulton Mall and Kern Street. Then there’s the new — the city’s first WinterFest (at various venues all day Saturday) and Warnors Theatre’s Big Band Christmas on Sunday. More info below.

3. WEEZE THE JUICE
Don’t lie — you’re at least a bit intrigued by the idea of a Pauly Shore stand-up show at Starline tonight. One note: There were two shows, but the first one got canceled, so now there’s just the late show. Peep my interview with Shore. [Tix]

4. ROCK WITH NORMA JEAN
Club Retro lands its biggest show in a while with metalcore band Norma Jean (previously seen in Fresno at Rainbow Ballroom and at Save Mart Center for Warped Tour ’08). Also playing for the all-ages hard rock crowd: Oh Sleeper, Close Your Eyes and Stray From the Path. Local band Your Hero is a Villain rounds out the bill. [Tickets]

5. LOOK IN PEOPLES’ RECORD BAGS
I Iove this idea. Tonight’s “What’s In Your Record Bag?” party, put on by the always-dope The Soulflower Group, combines well-traveled tune selectors and music junkies who aren’t traditional DJs. In this case, it’s Aaron Wall of 40 Watt Hype and photographer Ryan Jones. It’s going to equal a night of eclectic — and probably surprising — tunes at Audie’s Olympic. [More info]

On Saturday night we will attend the Bach Children’s Choir concert at 7 pm at First Presbyterian church on M street. Sunday night at 7 pm we will attend the Bravos and Breadcrumbs concert put on by Fresno Youth Orchestra, at the Shagoian center. Bach Choir and YOOF are both made up of very talented young people, and their concerts are always amazing. Good way to get into the holiday spirit!

I will be attending Youth Orchestras of Fresno’s winter concert Bravo and Breadcrumbs based on Hansel and Gretel. These talented young musicians never fail to amaze. It’s at the Performing Arts Center at Clovis North High School’s Paul Shaghoian Theater (a beautiful venue). Hope to see you there!
