Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

Other than watching that Boise State game.

1. FIND HOPE WITH MATT & KIM
Indie pop duo Matt & Kim — one of my favorite groups — headlines a big day of music Sunday at the Festival of Hope in Tulare. It’s a two-day event, aimed at suicide prevention, it’s totally free and the entertainment lineup is quite stellar. Sunday is the strong day for music. In addition to Matt & Kim’s closing performance (at 8 p.m.), top-notch local bands Strange Vine (3 p.m.), Rademacher (4:30 p.m.) and Fierce Creatures (6 p.m.) play as well. [More info]

2. GO TO THE FAIR
It’s the biggest show in town for the next 10 days, so it’s a no-brainer that you’d go to The Big Fresno Fair to indulge in deep-friend food, rides, and some of the best people-watching Fresno has to offer. Music-wise, the fair offers a few notable on-the-rise acts in the Paul Paul Theatre: Sick Puppies (tonight for the rockers), Big Time Rush (Saturday afternoon for the teeny boppers) and Miguel (Saturday night for the sexy R & B fans). There’s all kinds of other entertainment at the fair, from local bands (like King Sugar below) to grounds performers, so be sure to check the schedules. [More]

3. SEXY … WITH A SIDE OF MEATBALLS
Creative Fresno and Tokyo Garden host a special installment of local indie/alternative dance party Meatball Magic on Saturday. It’s another of CF’s “Sexy” parties — which are fundraisers for its downtown murals — featuring the Magical DJs you’re accustomed to seeing play at The Red Lantern. Oh, and looks who’s playing at the next Sexy party. [More]

4. FEEL THE BOOM BAP AT FULTON 55
The hip-hop scene takes over Fulton 55 on Saturday, featuring local vets such as Planet Asia, Diego Redd and Shake Da Mayor plus the upstart BluEyesOne. [Tickets]

5. DRINK, EAT & HANG OUT
Two Sunday afternoon events aimed at the drink-and-mingle crowd look like good bets. There’s the Tower District’s annual Central Valley Craft Brewer’s Oktoberfest — it offers more than 40 craft beer and wines, plus food samples from nearby restaurants. Then there’s the second annual Paws & Pomegranates, a wine and pet adoption event at ApCal Winery put on by Twin Pomegranates. There’s music, food, drinks and, of course, pets that could be yours. saw Matt & Kim on the Honda Civic tour a couple times this week, definitely great chemistry on stage and music and banter that will make you dance and smile your face off. stoked to see them again in Tulare on a smaller scale. highly recommended if you have the evening free!
