Five Things You Should Do This Weekend
Other than trying to get the “Pawn Stars” to buy your junk …
1. GROOVE WITH SAHAB
Fact: I haven’t been digging a new local artist as much as Sahab since a dude named Fashawn was coming up. Saturday night is Sahab’s album release party at Fulton 55, and it oughta signal his “arrival” on the local scene. Read more about Sahab and his electro/indie/hip-hop vocal stylings in this Q & A. [Tickets]
2. PUNCH YOUR METAL PASSPORT
Of all the hard rock bands that come through Fresno, not many of ‘em are from Iraq. OK, before Acrassicauda — who plays tonight at Babylon — none of them were from Iraq. The band was the subject of the 2007 documentary “Heavy Metal in Baghdad.” Read more of their unlikely story in this interview I did. [Tickets]
3. KEEP ON ROCKIN’
These Iraqi rockers are just the start of what’s a big rock weekend looming. You can also see the “lite” version (read: duo) of The Melvins tonight at Audie’s, SF-by-way-of-Visalia band Slow Trucks tonight at Cafe Infoshop, surging local rockers The Capital is Burning and Style Like Revelators combine tonight at Starline and touring Iron Maiden tribute band Invader at Starline on Saturday night with local Death Alley Motor Cult, who are celebrating a new album release. [Tickets / Info / Info / Info]
4. OBEY OBADIAH
Back before it was a star-making strategy to ironically cover songs and post the videos on YouTube, Arizona folkster Obadiah Parker made a name for himself by covering “Hey Ya” and get a few million hits. Parker is still chugging along these days, and he’s at Kuppajoe tonight. You should make it a point to see Omotola. We dig her. [More info]
5. ROCK YOUR BODY
Three of my favorite local DJs are getting together for a funky night at Ovidio tonight. DJ Don D joins up with his usual cohort F-Plus, and they’re added the extremely dope DJ 4 a.m. to the mix. 4 a.m. is a Fresno native — remember Octavius 4 a.m.? — who left for SF years ago, but recently moved back. Our gain. Anyhow, no cover tonight.

Everyone should’ve saw Kathy Griffin! She was great! At first I wasn’t so sure because her last few bravo specials haven’t been that great but they do know justice for her! The “local” jokes were the funniest.. Prisons,Ag museums, Target, Local restaurant, Stockton(the hood) lol
The Sahab poster rocks!
