Five Things You Should Do This Weekend
Ya know, in addition to that roller derby bout we’ve mentioned 46 times this week …
1. DON’T BE USELESS: We owe a top-of-the-post shout-out to this Sunday night show at Fulton 55 with Useless Keys, Quiet Americans and The Mallard. L.A.-based headliner Useless Keys and its “heavy space rock” is cool, but the main reason a lot of people will care about this is the return of Greer McGrettrick, a former Fresnan who used to play in Rademacher and is now behind SF’s The Mallard. Fresno Famous has more with McGrettrick. [Tickets]
2. GET FRESH WITH FASH: Fresh off a European tour that had him performing with the likes of Rakim, Fashawn returns home for his first Fresno show in many months. Like a buzzworthy, jet-setting rapper should, he’s headlining Tower Theatre. [Tickets]
3. GET YOUR LAUGH ON: It’s down to the final 16 in this year’s Central Valley Comedy Competition, and those 16 will be going head-to-head tonight and Saturday at Thai Palms. Six will advance to next weekend’s finals. Witness the whittling. [Info]
4. GO BIG OR STAY HOME: It’s a “Big” night for music tonight — with Big Bill Morganfield (he’s Muddy Waters’ son) playing the blues at Fulton 55 and Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys bringing some western swing to Audie’s. [Tix / Info]
5. ENTER THE BLUE LAGOON: It’s hot and a lot of people out there are probably wishing they had a pool. Organizers of the first Blue Lagoon — dubbed “Fresno’s exclusive and unique pool party” — are hoping that brings people their way. They’re trying to take a page of the popular Vegas pool parties, and they’re doing it right smack in the middle of town at Sierra Sport and Racquet Club on Blackstone Ave. (previously Dan Gamel’s). I done worked at Dan gamels over 13 years ago. It was the best job I ever had. Sure i wasn’t paid squat but I actually enjoyed going to work. Probably because I would be partying the whole time I was there lol. Hope the pool party turns out well.
