When you’re not stalking Meg Whitman and Jerry Brown during their Fresno visit …
1. GET A TASTE OF ELY GUERRA
I’m super intrigued by Saturday’s performance by Ely Guerra at Audie’s Olympic. Guerra is a Mexican singer/songwriter whose music has enough appeal to crossover to the indie rock kids that Love the Captive usually brings out to its shows. Guerra’s a star, no doubt (check out this recent NY Daily News profile) but I have to wonder if Fresno’s gonna show up for this one. Hope so.
2. ROCK WITH SOME SWEDES
Swedish hard rockers Vains of Jenna hit Fresno tonight for a gig at Starline. Even though they’re Europeans, these guys have some of that hard rock sleeze that Fresno likes. They’ve played with folks like Poison and GWAR in the past. Tonight they’re joined by Fresno’s own young sleeze rock group Shiver Fox. More at americanmadeconcerts.com.
3. DOWNTOWN GOES ‘FIRST CLASS’
There’s some new life at Chukchansi Park this weekend, as “First Class Fridays” debuts inside the 600 Club. This is not to replace The Penthouse, which is still going on Saturday nights, just a new Friday night party in the same space. What do you guys think?
4. CHECK OUT THE ‘HEART’ OF DOWNTOWN
Tonight, Iron Bird Cafe hosts a music and poetry night called “Heart of the City,” which may or may not be a good pre-party for “First Class Fridays.” Either way, it’s nice to see new cultural events popping up downtown.
5. PAINT THE NIGHT
One common thread this weekend is evening art parties — there’s a benefit event for DCAC, Red Wave Tattoo and Art Gallery’s anniversary party and an art carnival that goes until 3 a.m. Yep, the art folks are partying like crazy this weekend.
