Since the weekend has an extra day, I’m giving you an extra thing to do …
1. GET SPORTY
If last weekend was a two-headed monster of big local music shows, this weekend it’s a two-headed monster of sports. It’s probably not news to anybody that Fresno State football kicks off its season on Saturday against visiting Cincinnati. And the Fresno Grizzlies have their final homestand of the season (through Monday), in a first-place race that’s down to the wire.
2. GET JAZZY WITH KAREN
Have you guys been paying attention to Karen Marguth lately? ‘Cause if you haven’t, you should be. The Fresno-based jazz singer is having a big year thus far, playing all around the state and charting well with her latest CD. She’s playing tonight at 9 at Sequoia Brewing Co.’s North Fresno location. And she’s backed by Espacio, a great local jazz band. Get a free download here.
3. BE SILENT, YOUNG CREATURES
The show all the hip indie kids are headed to is tonight’s at Audie’s Olympic, which features everybody’s favorite new local band Fierce Creatures, along with touring indie/folk acts The Silent Comedy and Brothers Young.
4. ROCK OUT AT STARLINE
Another big show tonight is at Starline, where hard rockers Synezra are having their CD release party. The rest of the show is packed with local rock talent too — Saints of Insanity, Spacehooker and Grooveyard.
5. GO ON A SAFARI … WITHOUT LEAVING FRESNO
If you like after-hours parties at Chaffee Zoo (and after our Wild Fresno Tweetup, who doesn’t?), then be on notice that the zoo’s annual Safari Night is tonight. Ticket info here.
6. HOLD YOUR STRONG ARM STEADY
A little something for you hip-hop lovers: Strong Arm Steady is in Visalia this evening, performing at The Cellar Door. A long list of locals are on the bill too. Go nod your head.
