Many of these shouldn’t be a surprise, if you’ve been reading the site this week …
1. GET GRIZZLY WITH FASHAWN
Rapper Fashawn – the biggest national artist we Fresnans can call our own right now — is doing his first local show of the year tonight at Star Palace. He’s celebrating the release of his new mixtape, “Grizzly City 3,” (which is out via download today). He’s also got another buzzy hip-hopper coming to help out — Curren$y. Expect a big crowd.
2. SEE PATRICK CONTRERAS’ VIOLIN CATCH FIRE
Patrick Contreras is the second half of a weekend centered around Fresno’s two brightest young music stars. (They’re both splashed across The Bee today; read their artist-on-artist interviews here). Contreras is having the sequel to his successful Tower District Block Party from a year ago. Not only will you see Patrick and his wild violin playing, but you can catch two other great rising local bands — Fierce Creatures and Strange Vine. Expect a big ol’ crowd here too. It’s happening, festival style, in the Tower Theatre parking lot.
3. FEED YOUR ‘APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION’
Steven Adler — the former Guns ‘N’ Roses drummer — brings his current band Adler’s Appetite to Starline on Friday. They’re going to be playing GnR’s staple “Appetite for Destruction” in its entirety, and probably more. The band includes members of Enuff Z’Nuff, Quiet Riot, Faster Pussycat and Ladyjack. They’re joined by Anchored and local band The Beautifully Demolished, which is making its debut. Get tickets here.
4. FEED YOUR APPETITE FOR GREEK FOOD
This weekend is the 50th annual Fresno Greek Fest — and for most people that means it’s time to grub. Joan wrote a good appetizer in today’s Bee, so check that out. I suspect she’ll offer some more insight on the blog today (no promises). But this has to be on my list too, because lots of people are going to be out there. Plus, you might see Kopi.
5. SAY FRESYES TO ROLLER DERBY
We’ve already talked a lot about NoTown Roller Derby’s FresYES, so just the facts here: NoTown is splitting into three teams — The Shaw Shankers, The Fulton Maulers and The Huntington Blvd. Harlots — and having a tournament amongst itself. The most Frestastic team will win. If you’ve never been to a derby bout, it’s a lot of fun, good for the whole family. You can even possibly win tickets right here.
