To-Do Tonight: Mall rockin’, Taylor Hicks, Thinkin’ Pink and much more

Aug2010 web.jpg

A bunch of cool stuff happening tonight. Here’s the rundown …

ROCK THE MALL
The Rock the Mall concert series picks back up at Sierra Vista Mall with rock cover band Shotgun Mary. These things get big crowds, so bring a chair or blanket and get out there.

TAYLOR HICKS
So I interviewed Taylor Hicks. You can read it here. He’s playing at Chukchansi tonight — and tickets are still available. Question: After reading the Q & A, do you feel sorry for the guy? Or does he just seem kinda out there?

DIERKS BENTLEY
This country star on-the-rise is hitching his trailer to Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in Lemoore tonight. Tickets cost $35-$65. They’re not as sale online anymore, so you’ll have to get them at the casino. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

SOCIAL MEDIA CLUB FRESNO
For a non-music option: Fresno’s Social Media Club is hosting a speed networking event tonight at Downtown Club. So if you wanna get out from behind that Facebook or Twitter account and meet new people, here’s a chance. It starts at 6:30 p.m.

THINK PINK
Sequoia Brewing Co. in the Tower is hosting a breast cancer benefit night with live music from Licorice Pimpz. It’s the first of two.

ROCK SOLID THURSDAYS
The Rock Solid Thursdays concert series at Crossroads brings another local talent trifecta with Hot Shade, Lezayr and Merlinda Espinosa. 7 p.m.

OLLY NEASHAM
UK singer Olly Neasham is back in Fresno today (he played two shows here two weeks back) for a free gig at Spinners Records. The Fresnan has a complete rundown.

FYI says:

You forgot a word after “meet new…” in the paragraph on the Social Media Club. On the Fashawn/Patrick Contreras post, you wrote “you’re” instead of “you’ll”…and I’ve noticed similar stuff on a few of your other posts recently. I’m not trying to be a snide punk by pointing them out. I’m a fellow writer and if I was a professional journalist who posted little mistakes like that, I’d want to correct them. Again, just a heads up, not a “you suck” :)

Mike Oz says:

Oh, but I do kinda suck sometimes. You’re right. Sloppy on my part. I’m frantically trying to get stuff done today … but that’s no excuse.

I fixed the one in this post. I had already fixed the other. Thanks!

Seeing Taylor Hicks tonight, and looking forward to the concert….
Don’t feel sorry for the guy at all! He had the greatest exposure with AI and now it is up to him to manage the rest of his career…Sounds like he has had the mature realization that that path is not for everyone, and he is working to pave his own ‘out there’.

Glad to see these artists in the Valley, we welcome them!

CJ28 says:

Definitely going to see Shotgunn Mary at the Mall. They are a great band and this is a great community event. Bring the kids, how often do they get to see a live band too.

Mike Oz says:

what was that? can you speak up?

thetruth says:

Why is the world would anyone feel sorry for Mr. Hicks, who by all accounts earned well over $3 million dollars in the last couple of years, travels the world and who is living his dream? Perhaps it’s you who we should feel sorry for, Mr. Oz.

Famous says:

What’s with the Oz hating in these comments?

seethruyou says:

Mike Oz you are a piece of work. I saw where you asked if I felt sorry for Taylor H. or thought he was out there. The answer is NO, I don’t feel a bit sorry for him, he is living his dream. Dream of being a good musician with a kick-ass band. And becoming a successful businessman. You went into this interview with some very wrong preconceived notions. It would be nice if you attempted to educate yourself. You could start by actually going to hear him play and seeing what he is really all about.
Hes not the Stepford Idol and I think that makes him very happy.
And no one thought he sounded jaded or thinks hes “out there”. The only person that sounded jaded and out there was you. Plus, you sounded prejudiced and uninformed. Those are not qualities an good interviewer should want.
Taylor is not a one trick pony, like many “idols”. He can do many things well. He has a great voice, is an excellent musician. But you know, if you are too cool to check him out and really get to know the person he is then you will never know.

I left this comment on the original interview, which I enjoyed because Taylor did such a good job with it but it seems this is where I should have commented

My 8-bit mouth won’t allow me to go any louder :)

traci says:

YEAH, Mike, I guess YOU WILL NEVER KNOW.

Elizabeth Smith says:

Yea, Mike, you do kinda suck sometimes. Looks like your Taylor Hicks article was one of those times.

Elizabeth Smith says:

I heard there were 1300+ at the show last night . . . way to go Taylor!!!
