When you’re not getting caught up on The Beehive’s soap opera …
1. SEE MAYER HAWTHORNE IN FRESNO — FINALLY
A lot of people have been waiting patiently for Mayer Hawthorne to perform in Fresno. Like a year. That was because the retro soul-singing phenom canceled a much-anticipated Fresno show last summer because of strep throat. Well, he’s here on Saturday night, playing at Frank’s Place. If you still haven’t jumped on the Mayer bandwagon, check out “Maybe So, Maybe No” and “Your East Loving Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin’”. You still got a chance to win tickets from us here. Or buy them at Ticketfly.
2. FEEL GOOD WITH TONY TONE TONI
If Mayer isn’t your thing, and you’re of a New Jack Swing kinda cat (and I can’t blame you if you are), then Tony Toni Tone’s Woodward Park appearance on Saturday might win for you. While it’s true Raphael Saadiq isn’t with them, there’s really no arguing with the Tonys’ catalog. There are some great songs in there. Check out my Mayer Hawthorne vs. 3T comparison here. Get tickets here.
3. BRING A BIB
Oh, man, if you’re a barbecue lover, then downtown Fresno is the place to be this weekend for the Central California Invitational Rib Cook-Off, which features grill masters from around the country. We told you about it a few weeks back, then Joan Obra gave some more details in her column. While you’re out there, watch out for Viper City Brass Band playing for tips.
4. GO TO TOKYO WITH CREATIVE FRESNO
Like local music, downtown murals and Tokyo Garden? Then Saturday night’s Creative Fresno rock benefit is the best of all those worlds. It’s happening at Tokyo Garden with local bands Love Pollution, Almost Winter and Bicicleta and money raised supports CF’s fund for downtown muraling.
5. PARTY LIKE IT’S ‘THE HILLS’
I suppose this is sorta an asterisk on the “should” in “Five Things You Should Do.” I’m including this more as an acknowledgment than an endorsement, ’cause I figure some people will be wanting to go. Justin Bobby from “The Hills” is bringing his band to Aqua Shi tonight. Do with that information what you will.
