It’s a big weekend, Fresnans. Lots to do. Here’s some of the best stuff. Be sure to check out today’s Post No Bills in a few hours for a more complete look at weekend happenings. Hopefully you get out there and have some fun.
1. FIND HIPSTER HEAVEN AT FRANK’S PLACE
There’s a lot of hype about this weekend’s shows at Frank’s Place, the music club next to Warnors Theatre (and below Star Palace). This weekend is pretty much its coming out party.
Promoters Love the Captive will have a strong hold over that place in the coming months, and their first batch of shows is this weekend — with indie rock band Radar Bros. tonight and a big Saturday show with electro-rock band Head Like a Kite and girl pop group Smoosh. The shows are open to all ages.
2. FIND FINE FOLK AT FRANK’S PLACE
It’s not only Love the Captive who’s making good use of Frank’s Place. The Fresno Folklore Society has landed a pretty big name for a Sunday show there — Carolina Chocolate Drops. We land a lot of good folk concerts here, but this one is WAYYY more hip. Carolina Chocolate Drops are a North Carolina-based old-time string band that recently played Bonaroo and cover pop hits:
3. LAUGH IT UP AT THE COMEDY CONNECTION
I gave you a full rundown of this weekend’s comedy options yesterday, but the one at the top of my list is tonight’s “A.C. Comedy Connection” show at Babylon. It’s got Jay Davis, Brian Scolaro and Darren Carter. Local guys Rick Roddam, Jon Hastings, Terry Michaels and Kris DeVold are also on the bill.
4. SEE HAWKS IN FRESNO
I See Hawks in L.A. is this “stoner country” band that’s playing Audie’s Olympic tonight. Audie himself called me to rave about these guys — so that’s enough of a co-sign for me to recommend this to you all. Surprise, surprise: They’ve got a nice endorsement from High Times, which wrote: “These guys are the house band for a revolution that isn’t over yet.”
5. GET SWEPT AWAY BY DAVID ARTHUR BROWN
You know it’s a packed weekend for entertainment when there’s even a battle for Sunday night. Audie’s has David Arthur Brown on Sunday, which is up against the Carolina Chocolate Drops show I talked up above. Brown also comes with a big endorsement. He used to play in Beck’s band, but now lives in Barcelona and has adopted this bossa nova-meets-chill soul style. His music sounds like the soundtrack to an summer evening in Spain. So if that sounds good, you know where to be.
