While Fresno mourns Gen. Vang Pao …
1. PUMP UP YOUR KICKS … AND GET TO VISALIA
The Beehive is involved in Saturday night’s Foster the People show for one very important reason: I think Foster the People has a crapload of potential. So of course I think you should see them at The Cellar Door. If you’ve never been to The Cellar Door this is a good chance to see the coolest music venue in the Valley (I named it venue of the year for 2010 in my column today, btw). Here’s an interview with Foster the People’s frontman Mark Foster about the band’s busy year ahead. See ya Saturday night! Until then, enjoy more “Pumped Up Kicks.”
2. PICK THE PACK
There’s a hip-hop dilemma tonight — the New Boyz are in Visalia at the Fox Theatre and The Pack is at Roe. Personally, I’d choose The Pack. Mainly because I’d wanna see what kinda crazy sh*t Lil B (of The Pack) is gonna do — watch this if you’re curious about the wacky world of Lil B. I’m also intrigued by DJ Skeet Skeet, who is on the rise in the L.A. clubs. Cop some tickets here. This show, btw, is the first for new event group SUM Productions.
3. SEE SOME FORBIDDEN METAL
If you miss the thrash metal of the ’80s, then don’t miss Forbidden tonight at Babylon. This Bay Area band came outta the same thrash scene as Testament and Exodus. Having reunited a few years back, Forbidden released a new album in 2010, its first in 13 years. Now you can see them in Fresno as part of a big ol’ metal show. There’s a long list of local and regional bands on the undercard. Scope it on the flier.
4. FIGHT HUNGER … WATCH A HEAD SHAVING
Population We is another event looking to capitalize on the momentum from Walmart’s Fighting Hunger contest. This is a food drive for Community Food Bank, and also a clothing and blanket drive.
Of particular note for Facebookers — Jim Bean (aka Reggie DeLeon), one of the most prolific hunger fighters will be shaving his head. He made the promise that if Fresno got one million votes he’d go bald, so he’ll be doing that. It’s happening at 1-4 p.m. Saturday at La Promesa Church, 1604 S. Cedar Ave. More details here.
5. LAUGH IT UP
If you need a laugh, you got a couple chances this weekend. There’s the two-night One Mic Stand at Thai Palms and Behind the Mic at Teazer’s downtown location. Good news on the Teazer show: it’s F-R-E-E.
