While you get started on my 2011 Fresno checklist …
1. CELEBRATE WITH AUDIE
Audie from Audie’s Olympic is having his birthday this weekend — and he’s celebrating with a big two-night live music party. A few things to note: There is an actual band named Meth Leppard (!!) and Strange Vine (one of the best bands in town) is playing Saturday night with burlesque dancers also part of the show. I don’t think you can wrong either night, folks.
2. GET LUCKY
Super Lucky Catz was once my favorite band in town, but I haven’t seen much of them lately. So if you’re like me and looking for a fix of their soul-meets-jam-band sound, then get to Starline tonight. It’s the Catz’ first gig of 2011, I believe.
3. ‘LIKE’ SOME BLUES
The Central Valley Blues Society has put together a free concert on Saturday to celebrate Fresno’s efforts in Walmart’s Fighting Hunger contest. Basically, it’s a big pat on the back for the community with free blues and a canned food drive — so you can keep fighting hunger. It’s happening at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Babylon and features Deja Blues plus a number of all-stars from the local blues scene.
4. GET ELECTRIC WITH HANS YORK
Hans York is a folky Seattle-based musician with strong Fresno ties — he’s married to a Fresnan and also plays in the Fresno-heavy fusion band Lyquid Amber. Saturday, though, you can see him doing his solo thing. He’s backed up by a couple well-known local music dudes, Ray Moore and Kevin Hill. York says it’s going to be a rare electric show for him. Also worth noting: It’s happening at the newish downtown gallery/party space The Treasury, so if you’ve never been there, here’s a good chance.
5. BE AN ADVENTUROUS MOVIEGOER
Donald already told you how much he loves tonight’s Fresno Filmsworks offering at Tower Theatre. Add to that Teazer’s International Movie Night, also happening tonight, and you’ve got a couple reasons to go against the movie-watching grain.
