First look at the 2011 Rogue Festival muse
It’s almost time for this year’s Rogue Festival, which brings 10 days of theater, music, art and more, March 3-12. Once again, festival organizers have given us the honor of unveiling the Rogue “Muse” — which serves as the festival’s logo and, in many ways, its soul.
This year, the muse comes from artist Reza Assemi, who is also the well-known downtown developer behind such projects as Broadway Studios and Iron Bird Lofts.
“Yes there are two,” says festival co-director Renee Newlove. “Because we loved both options, we are going with both of them.”
This year is the festival’s 10th year, so Newlove says they’re getting some special merchandise ready, like tote bags with all 10 Rogue muses. Keep an eye on roguefestival.com or more details as they’re rolled out.
So …. what do ya think?

He looks cold.
I’ve known this piece of work for years, it’s about 10 years old, and really enjoy it.
But I must say, I really really like the new logo!
It’s certainly a powerful piece. But as a Muse it seems to me to inspire feelings of loneliness, fear, terror and alienation. The essence of the abused seeking solace in hiding away from those that would them harm.
Dang, I guess Don Monroe’s disregard for the festival and all it’s participants really hit home this year.

I don’t want to look at it. Not inspiring.
I agree with what you said about it – probably why I like the piece so much.
The Rogue’s very first muse spoke of madness and uncomfortable love, so this one makes sense.
I like it for a muse simply because it evokes such strong feelings and incites conversation about it’s tone, meaning, and purpose. Did he lock himself inside somehow? Is he keeping US safe from his madness? And what of the woman in his hand…is that a woman? His woman??? A lone tattoo?
And notice – even tho he’s locked in, the hinges are off the door on his right. Unhinged, like the man, perhaps?
This kind of art is intriguing, as are many of the works in the Rogue. The inspiration of this muse comes from deep within the mind of the artist, and each artist’s mind/heart is on display during the festival.
I love it.
It takes an eye to be inspired by art, it takes an artist to understand the beauty. I love it!
I know the piece. Have appreciated it for a decade. Congrats to Reza!
Is that a Che tattoo on the model’s right arm?
Yes! Art is in the eye of the beholder.
