Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

Other than seeing that little ol’ musical over at Saroyan Theatre …

1. MAKE THE BLUES YOUR MUSE
Blues at the Muse in the third installment of the concert series at Fresno Art Museum that has brought us Rock the Muse and Jazz at the Muse. For the blues version, there are performances from Joe Walton and the West Fresno All-Stars giving us a taste of the west side’s blues legacy, plus Joel Pickford & The Hell Hounds, who will surely be raising hell. Money raised helps the museum. Advance tickets here.

2. FIND BASEBALL + BREWS
Now that the Grizzlies’ season is upon us, I can regularly recommend that you go watch some baseball downtown.

This Saturday, though, you should swing by nearby Tioga-Sequoia Brewing Co. for a pre-game party with the ladies of NOTown Roller Derby. They’re calling it “Slam N’ Jam: a NOtown Roller Derby Beer Garden.”

You can see Tioga-Sequoia’s new digs, hang with roller girls and have some fun before the game. It starts at noon and runs until 8 p.m. Saturday’s baseball game starts at 7 p.m.

3. SEE SAHAB
I’ve been really vibing to local musician Sahab recently. He’s got this electro-soul-meets-hip-hop thing going — and he’s doing it well. This weekend offers two opportunities to see him. He’s playing tonight at Chinatown Youth Center for the all-ages crowd, and then he’s at Fulton 55 on Saturday night as an opener for Argyle Pimps. I recommend heading over to his Bandcamp page and listening to the music he’s been putting out the past few months.

4. GET YOUR ROCKABILLY FIX AT AUDIE’S
Local rockabilly lovers already consider Audie’s Olympic one of their favorite haunts. This weekend, they might as well just move in to the club. Audie’s has a big ol’ rockabilly weekend with three days of shows featuring Three Bad Jacks, The Twistin’ Tornados (Happy B-day, Laura Splotch!) and Bob Wayne and the Outlaw Carnies (who you alt-country fans oughta dig too).

5. TAKE A FRESNO COUNTY WINE JOURNEY
Saturday and Sunday is the thrice-annual Fresno County Wine Journey, offering a chance to sample vino from eight different local wineries. Each location offers samples of their own locally made wines, plus many offer food and live entertainment. A Nonini Winery, Engelmann Cellars and Milla Vineyards are among the participants. I’ll be heading out to the Tower District Classic Car Show on Saturday (10am-5pm).

I will be serving up tasty $4 brews at Slam N’ Jam! China Peak will be raffling off some lift tickets and Jerkin’ For A Livin’ will have their Tioga Sequoia Tamarack-infused jerky as well! Cruise in to say hi and stay for a cold one….

Fulton 55 has QUICKLY transformed from “500 seats so we can hold those out-of-town acts other places can’t!” to “We’re content to book the exact same stuff as Audie’s and Starline, even if the crowds aren’t near 500 people.”

Comedy night? Yah, that’s tough to find anywhere else. Argyle Pimps just played at Starline. Shiver Fox. King Sugar. 40 Watt Hype. Aesop. Cole Fonseca. Atomic Punks. Six Ounce Gloves. PechaKucha. Motel Drive. Fay Wrays. Mofo. Glen Delpit.

Seriously? What happened to the big shows? The entertainment bookings we couldn’t get anywhere else??

C’mon Fulton 55, don’t give up on me/us already! Getyou some Ani DiFranco stat!

Or get Patrick Contreras, Rod Piazza and Let’s Go Bowling. Cuz, y’know, those guys are tough to find at Audie’s or Starline, y’know?

Joy says:

If all that stuff listed above just isn’t working for you, how about something different?

Uncle Bucky’s Trailer Style is playing at Full Circle Saturday at 8pm.

A hit at Rogue 2010…

Definitely… different. You should see for yourself.
