1. ENJOY SPRING WHILE IT LASTS
Since this is Fresno and it could be 100 degrees by next weekend, enjoy our “spring” as long as you can. One thing to do in that vein is Saturday’s Spring Fling — it’s a new party with a Springtini-type approach. There’s food, drinks, a fashion show and live music. Notably: Shiver Fox is playing its first gig back at home since playing SXSW and spending a few months recording in Nashville.
2. HAVE A CHARMING EVENING
This Charming Band — the popular Smiths cover band from San Francisco — returns to Fresno this weekend. The band sells out every time it comes to town, but this time is playing a different venue. They’ll be Charming your melancholy asses over at Starline this time, so the under-21 crowd is allowed.
3. ADOPT A PET
Saturday is Super Pet Adoption at Fresno State. It’s when all the animal shelters in the area come together and bring out their best dogs and cats for adoption. As the owner of a shelter dog, I encourage you to go the adoption route if you’re looking for a new pet. And if you know somebody looking for a dog or cat, send ‘em over there on Saturday.
4. UNLEASH WHAT’S SUPPRESSED
Local ska band Suppressors is having a release party for its “Small Time Hustler” CD tonight at Audie’s Olympic. The band has been relatively quiet lately, while finishing up the CD, so we’re sure this is going to a dirty, skankin’ party.
5. LEARN YOUR SOCIAL STUDIES
Looking for a new favorite indie band? Maybe Social Studies will strike your fancy. This Bay Area band has a playful pop style that’s catchy and keyboard driven. They’ve got a lot of buzz back home — the SF Chron called them “indie rock perfection.” Their Fresno shows pits them with Fresno indie rock champs in Rademacher and rising stars in Fierce Creatures. All in all, should be a great show.
