Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

I know it’s Thursday, but I’m off tomorrow, so let’s start the weekend talk a bit early, K?

1. GO TO THE ODDEST FILM FESTIVAL IN TOWN
Yep, it’s time for another Swede Fest. A lot of cities have a lot of different types of film festivals, but Saturday’s Swede Fest is all ours. It’s dedicated to Sweded, or cheaply remade, films (see “Be Kind Rewind”). The cool thing is that anybody can take part — so you get films made by people with real interest in film-makings, or from a group of friends just having fun. Plus, it’s free to get in. Win!

2. LAUGH WITH JO
Comic Jo Koy — best recognized from his appearances on “Chelsea Lately” — is at Saroyan Theatre on Saturday. Koy is definitely on the rise. He’s even inked a deal for his own sitcom. Read about that and more in my interview with him.

3. GET YOUR INDIE ROCK ON
The indie rock show-to-be-at for the weekend is at Kuppajoe on Friday with Circles & Circles, Brother Luke and the Comrades, Greener by Color and Jonah and The Whale. That’s a lot of good local indie rock for five bucks. Just sayin’.

4. START YOUR MOTOR
If you’re more of a hard-rocker, then Starline is the place to on Friday, as Soulmotor makes a Fresno stop. The band is the side project of Tesla’s Brian Wheat. Soulmotor was active in the late ’90s/early ’00s, but is playing its first batch of shows in six years.

5. SUPPORT COMMUNITY RADIO
KFCF is having a benefit concert with local band — and current Artists You Should Know featureesPoor Man’s Poison. These guys are playing all over the place lately, and this latest time it’s to help community radio.
