Five Things You Should Do This Weekend

Besides that thing in Clovis with all the bulls and cowboy hats …

1. RIDE YOUR TRIKE
Part one of a big local CD release weekend comes from Blake Jones & The Trike Shop, who are debuting “The Underground Garden” at Audie’s Olympic on Saturday. It’s more than just an album release though, it’s also the debut of a big collaborative art piece inspired by the album that more than a dozen local artists contributed to. Reminder: You can get a free download from the album from us.

2. GET WITH THE HYPE
The other big CD release is from 40 Watt Hype, who are at Tower Theatre on Saturday. “Push” is 40 Watt’s new album (free download here) and their show oughta be big — featuring breakdancers, a drum line, poets and more.

3. BE DURTY
Tonight you can see the big debut show for Durty Addiction, a new female DJ duo consisting of Disco Kitten and DJ Cookee. Why aren’t there more female DJs? That’s one of the questions we asked these ladies in their Artists You Should Know Q & A.

4. LET YOUR HAIR DOWN
The cast of the recent local production of “Hair” is presenting the show’s music in a rock concert form on Sunday night at Starline. So if you missed the production, or if you just really liked the music, here’s another chance.

5. GET WILD WITH LOCAL TWEEPS
Oh heck yes, we’re going to plug Fresno Tweetup Goes Wild one more time. It’s our after-hours party at Chaffee Zoo, with local music, food, beer, prizes, games and, of course, Fresno’s Twitter community. Read more about why the event in awesome in my column today. Plus, we’ve got a pretty rad afterparty scheduled at Palomino’s.

Why? says:

The scene doesnt need more $50 djs, I dont know why youre making a huge deal over these 2 mediocre, at best, djs.

Mike Oz says:

I dunno that I’m making a “huge deal” out of them, but I do think a female DJ duo is interesting in a hey-we-don’t-see-much-of-that perspective.

blake says:

Mr. Oz, thanks for your tireless support of so many local events!
If someone cannot make it to our CD release party (gasp!), they can get the CD online. The link just went live today.
It’s over at CDBaby.

(it’ll be available at some of the download sites–itunes, etc. in a week or two.)

If you forget the link, you can always just put trike shop in the little search do-hickey.

Still Why? says:

Yet talented proven djs that dont have to beg to get on at places like Reps or Fajita and have djed for longer then 6 months dont have any gigs that night due to the booking of the hey-you-dont-see-much-of-that factor.

Actual talent is what i dont see much of with this group, not the “discovery” factor of a female dj duo

Rochelle says:

I went to high school with Blake-such incredible imagination and creativity, he could make any day fun at HHS (remember Lester Meckler and the Dart Club? The Sten Boys? I do!) So glad to see that he is still brimming with artistic whimsy and original musical ideaology.
