It’s a Grade-A weekend here in Fresno. Any of these things could be the No. 1 weekend option on any a regular weekend. So there’s no reason to sit at home and complain about how there’s “nothing to do.” Of course, there’s a lot more than this happening too, so keep your eyes open for Post No Bills for a bigger rundown.
1. TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL PARK
It’s opening weekend for the Fresno Grizzlies at The Chuk. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. tonight, 1:05 p.m. Saturday and 2:05 p.m. Sunday. Looks like a nice weekend for baseball too. P.S. They’re playing Fresno rival Portland, so go boo them. Ticket info and whatnot here.
2. JOIN THE INDIE FILM ORGY
The annual Fresno Film Festival starts a three-day run tonight at the Tower Theatre. There are eight different films to see. Check out reviews from The Bee’s Rick Bentley and Donald Munro to see what’s playing and what rated well. Hint: There are a few A’s in the bunch. Oh, and don’t miss the awesome promo video:
3. ROLL WITH NOTOWN
NoTown Roller Derby starts its home season on Saturday night at the Fresno Fairgrounds. It promises to be a night of fast-paced derby action, complete with big hits, fish nets and awesomely named skaters. It’s a doubleheader, starting at 5:30 p.m.
4. GET VINTAGE
It’s Vintage Days at Fresno State — and organizers expect 50,000 people to be out between the various Vintage activities like crafts, food, live music, the Boomtown Carnival and the Kids Zone. Get the rundown here.
I’ll be hosting the Battle of the Bands at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Satellite Student Union. This year’s competitors are: Always Ready, Motel Drive, Lezayr, Subdue, Six Day Truce, and E.Rose. Admission is $3 for Fresno State students, $5 for the public.
5. IT’S SPRINGTINI TIME
Live music, food, fashion and, of course, martinis, are on the agenda for the annual Springtini social event Saturday night. This year, live music comes from Licorice Pimps and Poor Man’s Poison. The Via Montana shopping center is the venue.
