Downtown’s live music lunch buffet

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Austin’s is now going three-day-a-week with the live music at lunch. Starting today, the incomparable Ron Thompson will play during lunch on Thursdays. If you’ve never seen him, he’s great. He also plays every Thursday night at Babylon.

UPDATE, 2/2: Starting today, Austin’s live music lunch buffet is expanding to Tuesdays, when you catch Rudy Parris performing 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you like blues guitar, then be sure to check him out. Again, it costs $10 and that access to the lunch buffet and the music upstairs.

Also worth a note for blues fans, Austin’s has L.A. band The 44′s playing on Friday night. The group was in Fresno a few weeks ago playing MoFo Party Band’s 21st anniversary party at Audie’s Olympic.

ORIGINAL POST, 1/13: This is pretty cool. Austin’s — the former Hero’s Sports Lounge in downtown Fresno — is launching a new lunch option today combining live music and all-you-can-eat grub.

For $10, you can have a buffet-style lunch and listen to the sounds of the Eva Scow Trio from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. As of now, it seems like it’s going to be happening every Wednesday.

Says Scow:

I’m confident that there are enough people downtown who would love to enjoy their lunch with some live music and an All You Can Eat Buffet! … Let’s stand behind the arts and cool venues that support it!!

Seems like a good idea, considering $10 is about what you’d pay for lunch in there anyway, and Eva Scow is one of the brightest young talents in Fresno. Plus, if this is successful, it oughta help establish Austin’s as a cool place trying something different to engage the downtown crowd.

i ate at austin’s buffet lunch yesterday. it was pretty good. in fact, my brother and i were their first two buffet customers (it was their first day doing it). yesterday was fajiti type fixins + pizza. they said they’ll mix it up w/some sort of build your own every day + pizza.

and i think the music @ lunch is a pretty cool idea. hope it succeeds.

Abe Lopez says:

I hope it succeeds. I also hope that they push the envelope a little and use some local rock bands too. I think it would be cool.

Kim Burly says:

What a great idea, I hope it catches on. Next time Doug gets a furlough day on a Wednesday we’ll head down there!

Mike Oz says:

Yeah, me too. I called the owner to ask about that, or if this was successful, would they do different groups on different days of the week. He hasn’t called back yet, so I went minimal, because I wanted to get this post up in time for the lunch crowd.

MsJoey says:

While I really gross out at the thought of a buffet, I would attempt it just for the simple fact that it’s downtown and includes music.

I was talking this morning about the fact that many businesses fail to differentiate themselves. I commend Austin’s for actually creating an experience for the customer. While I did not go today due to a busy schedule. I would (will) drive across town for a chill lunch. I know Milano tried to offer tunes at lunch as well (RIP) and I would drive across town for the specials and music.

Good. Very good.

Other buffets Downtown, on Van Ness, are Joe’s Steakhouse, Holiday Inn, and Mezcal.
BTW, if you want live music at lunch, TIP YOUR MUSICIANS!

had many fun times playing jams at lunchtime with steve ono and others on thursdays at Milano’s. I miss it :(

MsJoey says:

Damn!! I miss Milano!!!!

Thanx Mike! It was a really good time and we will be doing it every Wednesday. If it keeps packing out like it did this week we will try to do it every day with the likes of Eva Scow and other local bands, rock, reggae, spanish rock, etc… It is only $10 dollars, all-u-can eat and all-u-can-drink, (sorry, only soft drinks not beer). Anyways, tonight we got local comedians so I better get cooking. – Patrick, owner
