There’s a lot of celebrating in Fresno this week …
Spinners Records, the Tower District’s neighborhood record shop, is celebrating 20 years with a party Wednesday night at Audie’s Olympic. Yep, while Wherehouse, Tower Records and others have trotted off to the Big Music Store in the Sky, Spinners is still selling vinyl on Olive Avenue.
That’s reason to celebrate, ain’t it? For the party, there will be live performances by local bands Docabilly, Poplord and Speedogeezer. And, get this, it’s totally free.
Compared to Spinners, the Dorktown podcast is (1) Just a baby and (2) Operating in a strange digital dimension. Dorktown is celebrating its four-year anniversary on Thursday night and the offering is actually quite similar to the Spinners party — free show at Audie’s featuring local bands. One thing the Dorktown party has that others don’t: An AC/DC tribute band called Big Balls. More details on the flier.
On Friday, the City of Fresno’s Parks & Rec Department is celebrating the opening of its latest action-sports attraction. The 30,000-square-foot Mosqueda Bike Park is opening with an X-Games star, a jam session and a $1,800 contest. More details below.

I do not own a record player. I do not collect vinyl.
Yet I try to buy gifts at Spinners and stop in as often as possible, because it’s local, it’s amazing, and just talking about albums and music with the owner is worth the stop-off and the price of an album or two.
Plus, he’s got CDs!
I love Spinners…here’s to another 20+ years.
Long live Spinners!
These places are not just ‘stores’ …they are
key pieces to the puzzle of community.
But…you wanna talk records? You go in there with a want, a desire…(of the vinyl record sort) and they’re liable to pull it out of a box somewhere in the back even if you couldn’t find it in the racks.
God bless Don and Don and Gary and Linda and all the folks who’ve worked and maintained this cultural institution.
And you just haven’t *lived* until you’ve walked by while Don B. is closing up, and he’s *blasting* some record out the front door into the neighborhood.
(sometimes you’ll wanna say: ‘what was that?’ and go buy a copy.)
Kudos to the Beehive for always being on the ball and marking all of these cool events.
If Bells and I could figure out how to record our podcasts onto vinyl, we damn well would.
Very much hope that everyone can make it out to Audie’s Wednesday AND Thursday night it shall be Fresno awesome. Thursday night does also feature the ability to buy Bells a Sierra Nevada, which is cool.
Thank you Mr. Oz for posting this and being Fresno bloggy awesome.
I <3 Spinners. Nothing beats the crackle of vinyl.
Put the needle on the record and the drum beat goes like this….
