Weekend Rewind: Men Who Cook, Audie’s, Hye Fest and more
Here’s our look back at the weekend that was. If you did something cool (or not-so-cool), let us know about it in the comments.
MEN WHO COOK
My second attempt at Men Who Cook was much smoother than the first. It was busy, yes, but with far less headaches. I figure I served up somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 carne asada tacos and most people seemed to really like them. The tastiness was more a testament to Guadalajara than me. James Collier also deserves some props to helping me out when the lines were really long. Overall, it was a good night. I heard the art museum had about 800 people there — more than the 600 that were expected, so that’s a success.
HYE FEST
I didn’t go, but The Fresnan reports on the dueling opinions for the inaugural Hye Fest on the Fulton Mall. Anybody go? What did you think? What was good? What needed improvement?
AUDIE’S + JOHNNY Q + DJ BRADLEY
I went to Audie’s Olympic on Friday night for local promoter/DJ Johnny Q’s birthday party. The highlight was DJ Bradley’s set on the turntables. Though he usually spins house music, he played a super funky set that I was definitely vibing to. More props for Audie’s: My brother-in-law and his girlfriend were in town visiting from the Bay Area and they loved Audie’s — thought it was a totally cool bar. I know numerous Fresnans who agree, me included.
PRIDE PARADE
D-Munro already covered that over here — just in case you missed it.
YOUR TURN
Anybody go see Psychostick? Or Diana Jones? Or Poncho Sanchez? Anything else cool?

Audie’s was fun! Wasnt planning on going out but was glad to stumble in there and run into so many great friends!
But my only question is, why was I the lone dancer during DJ Bradley’s set?
Check out semi-local band Hart Brake Kid. They played this weekend at Crossroads with Mercury Bullet. They are now based out of L.A., but Bob Rock hasn’t lost his roots. Give love to Hart Brake Kid! Playing Thursday at Yosemite Ranch!
i went and saw the grizzlies play on sunday afternoon. good times.
Mike, your tacos were good. no lie…just needed the lard.bUUT good flavor.
Hye Fest needed more food booths but the music was good. Maybe some more arts and crafts booths, too. I know they would have to be Armenian related but still… a lil more things to do would have been great.
because you rock the hardest
(i did have other people dancing, but you were the coolest)
thanks for the props mister oz, was nice to see you there! (turns out we have the same ll cool j retrospective LP).
hopefully i’ll get asked to drop another non-house set soon
HeyFest 2009 was great for the first year. I’m sure everyone involved would like and expect 2010 to be bigger and better. Here’s some photos of the event, and as you can tell, people seemed to be having fun. In Downtown Fresno?!?!

The Hye Fest was nice…there is no reason to knock it for the first time out. (Constructive criticism can’t hurt.) It was a great family event and has promise. And the dancing! The older folks can shake a leg. (Craig and Elliot too!) Kendall once again came through with some very tasty pizza. Great photos Joe!
Pride Parade was nice…there appeared to be many in attendance. Others said it was smaller than last year. It was nice to see that I wasn’t the only one that got a sunburn on Saturday.
