Know the ladies of NoTown: Ziggy Skullbust

All this week, we’re introducing you to members of the NoTown Roller Derby team before its bout this Saturday against the Prison City Derby Dames.

Yesterday, you met Ivory Gretts. Today, here’s Ziggy Skullbust.

Real Name: Lakisha Jernigan
Age: 20
Position: Jammer
Number: 7:30
# Years Experience: 1

When and why did you get involved with roller derby?
April of 2007 is when I saw the Smog City Roller Grrls promoting one of their upcoming bouts on the news so the following weekend I went to the bout and was immediately drawn in. I’ve always been pretty athletic so I figured I can totally do this. Also, you get to hit people! Who doesn’t want to do that without getting in trouble?

What’s the meaning behind your roller derby name?
I’m a huge David Bowie fan.

What’s your life like outside of roller derby?
I’m currently a Music major at Fresno City College so when I’m not knocking people on the ground, I’m doing something that involves music.

What reaction do you get when you tell people you do derby?
People are usually really curious about it. They want to know how the game works and if we get in fist fights on the track to which I sadly reply, “No.”

Finish this sentence: At one of our bouts you’ll probably see me _______________
Cursing at the huge female on the opposing team who just knocked me on my butt!

What’s the worst injury you’ve gotten in roller derby?
Luckily not anything too bad just a sore shoulder.

In your opinion, what’s the best thing about one of your bouts?
The crowd! The enthusiasm of the crowd is such a great feeling.

What other sports do you/would you play?
I like playing basketball, badminton and DDR. I know it’s not a sport but I had to throw it in there.

Does the derby girl in you come out in regular life? Throwing elbows at the grocery store?
When I’m in large crowds of people I’ll catch myself thinking, “Okay, there’s a hole on the outside so if I speed up and do a lateral…” and that’s Ziggy Skullbust in the mall.

What’s it like after bouts when people want your autograph?
To be honest, I wouldn’t know but my teammates say it’s a really good feeling. Maybe I’ll experience that feeling on the 30th.
