Lauren German misses days in Hawaii

NUP_151082_1028.JPGMany of you may recognize Lauren German, star of the new NBC series “Chicago Fire,” from the time she spent on “Hawaii Five-O” playing Lori Weston. Her departure from that CBS crime drama was almost as surprising as her being invited to stay past the original four-episode arc for which she was originally hired.

“They decided to bring me on as the next detective. I don’t know anything about the weird politics that went on but I think there were lot of women who didn’t like my character,” German says.

It looked like her character was being added as a potential love interest for series star Alex O’Loughlin. That made some viewers a little jealous.

The actress loved being on the show and remains close friends with the cast. German would reprise her role if asked. If things go well for German’s new series, there won’t be time to head back to the islands to be on the CBS show.

“But, if ‘Five-O’ is still on when this show ends, I would hope they would have me come back,” German says.

Others of you may recognize German for a couple of horror films she made. German was one of the few survivors of “Hostel II” but didn’t have the same luck with the 2003 remake of ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” Her death scene in that movie is considered a horror classic as the camera starts in front of her, goes through the hole in hear head and continues 300 yards into a cornfield. The gunshot is self inflicted. If you want to know where she was hiding the gun, you’ll have to rent the movie.

No offence Lauren, but I definitely wouldn’t want you back on Hawaii 5-0, thank you very much. The character, Lori, didn’t add anything to the team; she was wooden and completely devoid of any personality. The writers made a mistake there. As for her as a’potential love interest’ for McGarrett, the two of them didn’t have any chemistry and often her scenes with him were uncomfortable to watch. What really baffled me was that in interviews, Lauren always came across as a funny, witty, charming person, but NONE of that ever came out on the show….Lori Weston was a boring, often irritating presence and just didn’t fit in on the show.

Jenn says:

I agree with “Hunny Bee”. I don’t think it was so much the jealousy of female fans, but more her acting performance being very wooden performance. I did not find character very appealing, but just “DULL.” She had absolutely no chemistry with Alex O or with any of the other characters either. I just cannot figure out why it took show’s producers so long to realize what a mistake they made in casting her for the role.

Anonymously says:

I really did not like Lori Weston character she was boring, dull she took time away from other cast member no offense to Lauren German.I thought when she was on the show she put as female version of steve mcgarrett not even close to it no action, fight skill like kono she more googe for mcgarrett like a high school girl chase after her crush don’ t think she should never come back to the show she bring the rating down again like she did the first time when she was there.

Anna Deehan says:

Lauren, again no offence, but I agree with hunny bee. You were wooden and very stiff with no personality. You had zero chemistry with McGarrett. Yes, Lori Weston was boring and you didn’t flow with the “team”. Your character didn’t fit at all on the show.

Bert Hayling says:

It’s not so much that female fans were jealous of Lori as that she was initially presented as what is known in fandom as a “Mary Sue” – a paragon of female perfection who excels at everything, bringing her Yoda-esque wisdom in all things to bear on the hapless hero(es) of the piece before bedding said hero(es). The Mary Sue is a character whose express purpose is to give the WRITER of the piece a way of inserting herself into the story, and Mary Sues are pretty much universally reviled.

Someone made the ill-conceived decision to hang the “McG love interest” millstone around Lori Weston’s neck from the get-go and that decision colored how she was developed (and perceived) from that point on.

Then they added insult to injury with fandom and used her in place of Scott Caan’s Danno (or in place of Alex O’Loughlin’s Steve in one off-kilter “cargument”) in scenes that were traditionally Steve & Danno buddy scenes, and that was messing with a relationship that is pretty much sacrosanct – the bromance.

Unlike the “core four,” who were all given good backstory and skillset sketches starting with the pilot, Lori’s presentation and development was haphazard at best, with newly-touted superlative skills tossed in at random (and then disproved whenever it was decided Lori needed to be “rescued” by McGarrett in several laughably awkward and bizarre scenes).

By the time Lori started developing a quirky, fun personality and a more consistent set of skills, she was on her way off the canvas. There was only so much Lauren could do with what she was given, and I’m sure it must have been maddening for her, especially with her character often being wedged between the show’s de facto “supercouple,” if we use the Daytime concept to describe Steve & Danno’s partnership and bromance.

What is this girl smoking? We fans did not like her because she was terrible on H50. She did not fit in at all.The woman fans were not jealous of her. If that were the case we would not like any of the woman brought on to be a love interest for Steve. Michelle Borth plays his love interest on the show and the fans seem to be just fine with it.Michelle fits in with the cast, unlike LG! This interview just makes me relieved even more that she is no longer on my favorite show.

Shannon says:

I don’t think people hated Lori because they were jealous. They hated her because the character completely sucked. It was the writer’s fault. It’s a shame because Lauren German is a very likable person. I’m looking forward to seeing her on Chicago Fire. Hopefully the writers over there give her the opportunity to show viewers how talented she is.

NotALoriLover says:

Lauren – question – what are you smoking girl? You think people, read women, hated you for being a potential love interest for McGarrett? Really? I’m so glad you have such a high opinion of yourself. You were disliked because, are you ready, YOU CAN’T ACT. Watching you act was painful. Watching you interact with the other members of the cast was the equivalent of getting a root canal. I really hope that H5-0 is NEVER that desperate again as to have you come back and ruin the chemistry that exists with the current cast.

lee says:

H50 raised the bar for crime procedurals with the bromance. Scott Caan + Alex O’Loughlin = hit TV show. Why mess with that? Lori was in almost every scene which put Danny on the back burner and chin & kono were hardly in it at all. As a straight man who definitely isn’t jealous I can tell u the audience never warmed up to Lori because the writers shoved her down our throats and pushed aside all the characters we love.

matt says:

Scott caan is great in everything he does and Alex got his start on The Shield, probably the greatest show of all time. If the people at Hawaii five 0 are going to bring on new actors they need to be of the same caliber as those guys or they’ll stick out like a sore thumb. Lauren German didn’t have the chops. A better actress could’ve done more with a poorly written character

Karen says:

Lauren, you weren’t disliked because you were a potential love interest you were disliked because you can’t ACT! Sorry but watching you was very painful. The chemistry was lacking with everyone. You were stiff and wooden w/no expression other than disdain. I hope your other show fairs better because then we know you won’t be back on H5-0.

crazywitch says:

I agree with all. You made the character unbearable to watch actually and the show lost its dynamics somewhere along the line. As for the love interest thing, I don’t think we were jealous but sort surprised at that fact. Maybe if you brought personality to the character we might have embarrassed her more.

Notjealous says:

What????? Is she delusional? I tried to like her but she was in every scene at first and I missed Steve and Danny together. I found myself not as excited about the show until they started decreasing her time. I knew for sure I didn’t like her when that girl knocked her down and I started yelling “shoot her” at my screen. I found her facial expressions and voice tone were always the same. I really hope Chicago Fire lasts for many many years and we never have to see her again on H50. I like Catherine because they don’t shove her down our throats.

traci says:

A love interest for Steve means many potential shirtless love scenes for Alex. We female fans would love that! Just not with Lori. If we’re all so jealous how come I’ve read nothing but positive reactions to Michelle Borth joining the show. She and Alex have amazing chemistry & she can actually act. I feel bad for Lauren but she never fit in on h50. I really hope they do not bring her back.

Mia says:

Sorry honey, but I like Danno so I don’t care who Steve sleeps with, and I hated Bori Weston nevertheless. I certainly didn’t hate the character because of jealousy over Steve. Next excuse, please.
