Go ahead, Fresno. Answer that doorbell. It’s the guys from “The Book of Mormon.”
The national tour of the Broadway musical, which continues to sell out three years after its New York opening, will play a six-day run July 14-19, 2015 at the Saroyan Theatre. The musical, from “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, won nine Tony Awards in 2011.
Four years from frenzied New York opening to a stop in Fresno seems unprecedented for such a hot title. But “Book of Mormon” producers were aggressive from the start about sending the show out on tour, taking it to Denver a little over a year after the Broadway opening.
As for those in the Fresno theater scene who speculated that “Book of Mormon” would never come to Fresno because of its subject matter and explicit lyrics, I guess that puts that matter to rest.
The production will be part of the Fresno Lexus Broadway in Fresno 2014-15 Subscription Series, which producers announced today. The lineup includes another high-profile show that many Valley theatergoers have long waited for: “Jersey Boys,” which opened on Broadway in 2005. It will play this year at the Saroyan for a six-day run Oct. 28-Nov. 2.
The subscription schedule includes two touring revivals: “Camelot,” which will play Jan. 13-14, 2015; and “Guys and Dolls,” which will play March 3-4, 2015.
Two “add-on” performances also will be available: “Beauty and the Beast,” which will play Dec. 2-3, 2014; and “Mamma Mia,” which will play April 1-2, 2015.
Besides the two big tours of “Wicked,” which have set a new standard for Fresno touring productions in terms of number of performances and staging and production design, the new season is a breakthrough in terms of featuring two titles with essentially week-long runs.
The Broadway in Fresno season has been dominated for years by two-night stands occurring mid-week on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. That pattern continues with four of the six scheduled shows, but nabbing two longer runs is a coup.
For now, the only way to get “Book of Mormon” and “Jersey Boys” tickets is by purchasing a season subscription. Current season ticketholders can begin to renew their season subscription beginning April 7. New season ticket orders will begin 10 a.m. April 14. Packages start at $177.
Single tickets will be made available at a later date.
