Win tickets to the Fresno Philharmonic’s Wagner concert

The Fresno Philharmonic is going all-Wagner on Sunday, and I have four pairs of tickets to give away to Beehive readers. “Ride of the Valkyries: Wagner’s Greatest Hits” will feature selections from some of Wagner’s most beloved operas, including “Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg,” “Rienzi,” “Gotterdammerung,” “Tannhauser,” “Lohengrin” and “Die Walkure.” The orchestra, under the baton of music director Theodore Kuchar, will be joined by the Fresno Community Chorus Master Chorale and Fresno State Concert Choir, directed by Anna Hamre.

I have four pairs of tickets for the 2:30 p.m. Sunday performance to give away to Beehive readers.

To enter the contest, leave a comment on this post telling us if you’ve ever seen “Apocalypse Now” — and if you think the famous helicopter scene would have worked without Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries.” I’ll pick four winners, each of whom will win two tickets.

Deadline is 6 p.m. Wednesday. Please don’t enter more than once. I’ll be informing our winner by email on Wednesday evening, so keep a watch on your inbox. If I haven’t heard from a winner by Thursday morning, I reserve the right to pick another. These are paper tickets, so you’ll need to be able to come down to The Bee’s front counter by 5 p.m. Friday to pick them up. Rules are on the jump.

Only readers who submit a comment on this post are eligible. Winners will be picked at random. Recipients will be notified by e-mail at the end of each giveaway period. No substitutions or transfer of winners/prizes. Prizes are not redeemable for cash. Some prizes may have due dates for redemption/use. Employees and immediate family of The Fresno Bee, and any/all of the participating giveaway sponsors, are not eligible to win. By accepting a giveaway, recipient consents to allow the use of his/her name and/or photograph for advertising or similar promotions without further compensation. Winner releases all sponsors of liability regarding use and enjoyment of the prizes. Tax liabilities and insurance, if any, are sole responsibility of the winner. No purchase necessary to win.

Chris Foshee says:

I don’t think the scene would’ve worked without the Wagner score, just like Looney Tunes wouldn’t.

Megan Martin says:

I’ve always heard good thing! It would so exciting to actually get to go!

Kathryn Forbes says:

I have seen “Apocalypse Now” and have taught it several times in my college classes. I can’t even imagine the helicopter scene without Wagner’s music. But the juxtaposition of the majestic music with the human devastation makes the movie even more surreal. On a side note, have you ever seen the documentary about making Apocalypse NoW? even more surreal.

Edith says:

I have never seen Apocalypse Now, but would love to see this show!

Christina Morris says:

I haven’t seen all of Apocalypse Now, but the scene probably wouldn’t have worked without Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” because the film makers would have chosen that piece to fit the scene exactly right.

April Hare says:

I have seen Apocalypse Now many times one of my favorite movies. I received Apocalypse Now redux for a Valentines gift this year. The helicopter scene would not have been quit the same with out the ” Ride of the Valkyries”. I would love to see this show because Wagner was a great composer and it would be a wonderful late birthday present for me.

Bradford says:

Ja Mann, ich fühle mich irie mit Wagner. Danke.

Matthew D. O. says:

I’ve never seen it, but would love tickets!

Ron says:

Yes, I saw “Apocalypse Now” when it first came out and thought it was one of the strangest movies. I was very young and wished I had stayed home to watch The Golden Globes. It was the year Bette Midler won two awards. Sorry, but I don’t remember much about the movie.

Mark says:

Fresno Phil is always great!!

michele falk says:

I saw Apocalypse Now many years ago. The music “Ride of the Valkyries” definitely added to the excitement of the scene. Nothing like a screaming french horn feature!
