Ben & Jerry’s shows support of gay marriage with Hubby Hubby ice cream
Ben & Jerry’s is jumping into the marriage debate by changing the name of its Chubby Hubby ice cream to Hubby Hubby. The company, in partnership with Freedom to Marry, wants to raise awareness about marriage equality. Vermont, where the company is based, is one of the few states that legalized gay marriage.
This is another example of a company entering a heated political debate, as Joan pointed out last week. What do you think? Will this draw any backlash or support?

This makes me happy.
Of course it is going to draw both backlash and support, But I would hope… more support.
did it have to be fudge-covered pretzels?
The difference here is, Whole Foods already has detractors, but nobody doesn’t love at least ONE flavor of Ben & Jerry’s!
Although I’m partial to Haagen Dazs’ Dulce de Leche.
Proud of Ben & Jerry’s. Way to make a stand!
They got it all wrong. The pretzels need to be packed in fudge.
I don’t need my ice cream to make a political statement. No more Ben & Jerry’s at my house!
They must have plenty of money.Since the majority of people are against same sex “marriage” it sounds pretty stupid from a financial point of view. But i guess if you don’t mind the backlash and loss of business it’s a free country.
I hope Ben & Jerry’s are supported in their efforts to show…GAYS LOVE ICE CREAM!!!! See, straight people love ice cream, gays love ice cream! We should have a Gay & Straight Alliance of ice cream with sprinkles….Yum!!
I don’t care what the name is or what it stands for, that ice cream is awesome! And is it really any better to name it after the overweight married men of the world?
haha. Sorry, bad joke. I know some people will stop buying Ben & Jerry’s ice cream because of this, and that’s a shame. Oh well, more for me!
OMG! I love this idea and I’m not just saying that because I support Same Sex Marriage. If someone doesn’t want to buy a pint of ice cream just because it has a same sex couple then that person really has issues.
Whatever…people can boycott all they want.. all it means is that it will be easier to find my favorite icecream, again. ( I always have a difficult time finding this one)…
As for as the political side… Dave can’t tell the difference between people and voters…
This news made my day! I’m very happy for them and hope the icecream will be even better after their marriage!
I guess we know see the true relationship between Ben and Jerry. Companies shouldn’t get involved in politics. No more Ben and Jerry’s for me.
I LOVE BEN AND JERRY”S even more now! I will definately support them because they support my loved ones!
YUMMY! More ice cream for me!
I’m going right over to Whole Foods to buy some!
what you guys arent thinking about are all the people that work in ben and jerrys stores and own them all over america. they are independent and do not have to include anything they dont want to, but the media attention this has garnered will affect the sales of all those who own a ben and jerrys store. in some places business will drop off significantly enough an employee may have to be laid off. this is an extremely irresponsible decision that has ramifications far beyond a couple of millionaires losing a few bucks. grow up people, a retail business with tens of thousands or employees is not the place to make a political statement.

I’m not sure how Ben and Jerry’s is understood in these parts, but Ben and Jerry’s has been very involved in culture, the arts, science, and ‘political’ issues all along.
(waaaay back before it was a bandwagon issue, they were into not just using no bovine hormones, but were into best care of the cows (and) local farmers they bought their milk from.)
Though Ben and Jerry no longer own it (they may be ‘share owners, certainly, and no doubt still have a lot to say about what is done, but they went ‘corporate’ and sold some years ago,)
-They have always made a big deal about environmental and cultural issue in their packaging, their stores, and their promotions.
As a small company they were always very eco-involved, never very quiet about their political and social views and have been always very into their communities and state.
Ben and Jerry, and their employees have always been ‘crunchy granola’ types,
–and names like ‘Cherry Garcia’ (named after Jerry Garcia from the ‘Dead) and ‘Phish Food’ (I’ll let you figure that one out.) speak to that. Other flavors and titles connote ‘what they’re into and what they’re not’ as well.
Finally, they’re Vermonters.
Folks from NewEngland, especially Vermont, are kinda interesting that way.
Vermont has crushing unemployment, soaring drug problems, and total ‘yankee’ mindset of DEALING wtih their own issues.
(ex.)
-Recent scenarios where the Kansas church that is so ‘hater’ on gays (and so many other issues) was met with overwhelming town hall meetings where the residents (young and old) made it clear that they would not tolerate ‘hatespeech’ in their state –which not only covered the glbt bashing, (but) attacks on synogogues (Jewish Houses of worship) as well.
So, the fact that they’ve always been ‘alternative’ in their conduct, very ‘socially concious’ and have tried to stay true to their beliefs? (even though they’re now a corporation)
will suprise no-one who knows what Ben and Jerry’s is all about.
(Look through their catalogue, read their history, look at their web-site,
They have NEVER been just an icecream store, they have ALWAYS been socially active and concious and have NEVER hidden that.)
The (only) regrettable part would be that some would instantly equate ‘gay marriage’ with ‘chocolate covered’ anything (in this case pretzels,)
…but what can you do with the minds of perverts?
Though it may (hurt) some sales?,
-it will probably be a simple lateral shift,
-some will deliberately buy the icecream,
-others will deliberately ‘not’
—but they’ve got a ton of other products that nobody’s going to think twice about…
(these people aren’t stupid.)
