TLC’s ‘Honey Boo Boo’ really does stink

Alana ThompsonI hope you have your affairs in order because the end is here. It’s bad enough the network and cable channels are filled with a seemingly endless list of disgusting and vile reality shows. But TLC — that at one time stood for The Learning Channel but now stands or Totally Lame Channel — has taken reality TV to a whole new appalling level.

The 9 p.m. July 17 season opener for “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” will be a “Watch ‘n Sniff” event. Take a moment to think about that.

The cable series follows Alana “Honey Boo Boo,” her stay-at-home mom June “Mama,” chalk-mining dad Mike “Sugar Bear,” sisters Lauryn “Pumpkin,” Jessica “Chubbs,” Anna “Chickadee” and baby niece, Kaitlyn. During the show, viewers — and there are millions of them — will be able to share six odors associated with the fragrant smells found in rural McIntyre, GA.

One can only imagine what those smells would be — butter, dirt, money, desperation.

“We couldn’t think of a more fitting way to kick off the new season than with two Watch ‘n Sniff episodes,” Amy Winter, general manager of TLC says. Really? No better way? How about it start with someone from the network realizing that this pitiful excuse for entertainment should be canceled. Sounds like a better idea to me.

If you have no life and would like to stick your nose into the show’s business, the Watch n’ Sniff cards will be in the July 12 edition of Us Weekly and the July 15 edition of People.

If just soaking in the stench of reality TV isn’t enough, you can also have a virtual watch ‘n sniff experience at TLC.com/HoneyBooBoo, where matching the smells featured in the show will enter you to win $5,000. So that’s what dignity is selling for these days.

This same stunt was done on the Drew Carey Show way back in the 90′s.

I just viewed the season premier preview of Honey Boo Boo on TLC. I found it so disturbing that it prompted me to Google: Does TLC stand for The Learning Channel?I saw the link for your article, Mr. Bentley, and I felt validated as I am in complete agreement with you. TLC, who once offered quality and educational programming, has taken reality viewing to an an incredibly appalling level. I cannot comprehend how this show has a following. TLC= Totally Lame Crap!
